Christmas cheer at Attamurra

GOOD GAME: Runner-up Karen Forster in the Handicap Championship with sponsor Anne Schrapel and winner Bev Pedlar

AN ambrose format over nine holes with a Christmas theme attracted 60 women to the Mount Gambier Golf Club last week.

Dressed brightly in Christmas attire and adding to the fun day, the women were challenged with driving on one hole with a hockey stick, putting with a plastic putter, left handers using a right handed club and vice versa, as well as putting with a croquet mallet.

A small group of women who have recently taken up golf under the guidance of playing member Helen Gregory – Sue McPherson, Beth Mahony, Kirsten Johnson and Liz Clements – were announced winners with a score of 21-1/2 nett.

Runners-up, also mostly new golfers, with a score of 23-1/4 nett were Helen Gregory, Mandy Roberts, non-golfer Sue Szopory and Janine Duke.

Long drive winners were golfer Hope Bliss and non-golfer Wendy Earl.

Nearest the pin winners were golfer Faye Mainwaring and Szopory.

Mainwaring also won the pro shot.

The Happy Wanderers were Yvonne Shirley, Maxine McGregor and Marie Douglas.

Another feature of the day was the presentation of the Handicap Championship trophy and prizes by sponsor Anne Schrapel to the winner, Bev Pedlar and runner-up Karen Forster.

The Olympic Trophy, sponsored by Limestone Holdings, was presented to up-and-coming player Jess Parsons after her three consistent rounds played in November, completing her successful year.

Meanwhile, pleasant conditions and fairways running assisted 21 women when they played a par round on Saturday.

Steady player Helen Gregory produced a top round with 5-up to take the winner’s prize.

After nine holes, Gregory’s score was 3-up, including a birdie on the third hole before adding another 2-up on the back despite a wipe on the 12th.

The consistent Heather Chapman was 1-up after starting on the back nine before playing the front nine well, including a par on the sixth hole and birdie on the eighth, to add a further 3-up to her score to finish one shot behind Gregory for runner-up.

The pro shot on the eighth hole was claimed by Janina Morrison, while Kerry Pedlar was nearest the pin on the 16th.
