Tough season shaping up

MOUNT Gambier Lakers men suffered another loss in the Country Basketball League season on the weekend, going down to Horsham Hornets by 13 points.

It was another tough road trip for the side, with the Hornets too strong in all-but one quarter.

The opening two stanzas went in favour of the home side by eight and two points respectively, while the Lakers turned that around in the third to claim the quarter 21-17.

However, the Hornets were back on top in the final quarter with a 23-16 result and an overall 79-66 victory.

It has been a tough start to the season for the Lakers men, yet to taste victory as they occupy the bottom rung of the ladder.

They opened the season with a two-point loss to Portland Coasters which was their closest game to date.

A second-game nine-point loss to Terang Tornadoes compounded the poor start, followed by a forfeit to the Surfcoast Chargers.

The Lakers are finally at home this weekend, with two games pencilled in at the Icehouse.

They host the Colac Kookas on Saturday at 6pm, with a 2pm Sunday game against the Hornets.

It will be the last chance to put their season back on track prior to a Christmas break, with games to resume on January 9, 2022 with another home game against the Warrnambool Seahawks.

In contrast, the women sit second on the ladder, undefeated so far.

They had a bye on the weekend but face a double-header this round.

The Lakers head to Warrnambool on Saturday to face the Mermaids, followed by a home game at the Icehouse on Sunday against the Horsham Hornets at 12pm.
