Games live up to hype

DIVISION 2 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS: Runner-up Trudy Herbert, with winner Bev Pascoe.

IN an entertaining contest, Rosemary Martland claimed the women’s Division 1, 36 hole match-play Club Championship at the Blue Lake Golf Club last week.

A relatively new member, Martland came to the club with plenty of experience and plays off a 10 handicap.

Runner-up Dianne Perryman, a club champion several times in the last couple of decades, gave Martland a run for her money in a predicated tight game.

The weather was perfect and the course offered up plenty of run.

After the first nine holes Perryman was 1-up after Martland had found trouble in the ninth bunker.

The 10th hole was halved, Martland went on to par the 11th and 12th, won the 13th, then recorded pars on the 15th and 18th to be 3-up.

After a short lunch break Martland was still on a roll and hit the first green on her second shot.

Another par resulted to be 4-up until Perryman won the 25th, 26th and 27th holes to be only 1-down.

Martland hit back with wins on the 29th, 30th and 31st holes, while Perryman managed to win the 32nd.

However, the silverware was in Martland’s hands after a win on the 34th hole for a 4/2 victory.

Martland credited her win to holing quite a few long putts.

The Division 2, 27 hole match-play final between Bev Pascoe and Trudy Herbert also lived up to the hype.

Pascoe has played and won quite a few finals but it was Herbert’s first showing in a grand final and she proved she deserved to be there.

The scores were 4-up in favour of Pascoe after the first nine holes, Herbert only having a win on the ninth.

But she turned the tables with wins on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th.

Pascoe took the 14th and 15th, Herbert the 16th and it was all square after 18 holes.

The scores see-sawed until Pascoe’s finals experience came to the fore to win the game on the 26th hole 2/1.

Pascoe said her drives had been better than normal as well as the flat stick working its magic.

For Herbert, the last few weeks have seen her handicap drop dramatically and her next game will see her in Division 1.

Meanwhile, a stableford competition was held for those not involved in finals and some excellent results were recorded.

Division 1 winner Lee-Anne Medhurst signed for 41 points, 23 of them on the front nine and included a birdie-two on the fifth hole.

Annette Ford would have thought she had the winning voucher in her hand with her 40 points but had to settle for runner-up.

In third, Helen Stratford was a long way off the winners with 32 points but was happy with the pro-shot on the fifth hole.

Relative new-comer Shannon McDonnell was excited with her win in Division 2, carding an impressive score of 36 points to play to her handicap.

Runner-up Carol Melhuish scored 35 points and was also pleased to be back on the podium.

Lucy Richards and Lyn Annand followed with 34 points apiece.

Lyn Gill earned herself a ball having a ferret on the par 4 eighth hole.
