Double headers attract crowds

SMART PLAY: Centrals' Dylan Ridding bunts during the Division 1 baseball double-header Saturday night at Blue Lake Sports Park.

MOUNT Gambier and District baseball boasted two double-header fixtures in the Division 1 competition, with games on both Friday and Saturday night.

The match of the round saw Centrals take on South Indians Saturday night at Blue Lake Sports Park, with the former controlling both contests.

Dylan Chuck took the ball for Centrals, while Ryan Placcuci was on the mound for the Indians.

South showed plenty of fight in game one and scored early, but the class of Centrals was too much. Nathan Meinck lead the way with three hits to show why he is a star of the competition.

He was supported well, with the Centrals boys having 11 safe hits to South’s two.

Chuck was too classy on the mound and showed plenty of desire for the ball with a tough diving catch in the gravel.

Travis Lockwood led from the front as he helped hold the Indians to just two hits over seven innings.

Centrals had to much class and ran away with a 6-3 victory.

Game two saw much of the same – a lop-sided batting card was all the difference with Centrals again outclassing the Indians 12 hits to just four in front of a cold, but vocal crowd.

Ethan Chuck just was in control early on the hill while South went for stalwart Dean Hamilton as their game-two starter.

Koby Chant led the way with three hits in game two and has put together a nice start to the season.

Dylan Gull and the human road block Kylle McLean again led from the front with two hits a piece.

For South it was a case of the bats going cold on the night which helped Centrals take the two wins from two games and remain undefeated this season.

For the Indians, coach Bruce Morale will have the young guys on the training track as they will look to regain some of that hitting power they showed early in the year.

Friday night saw Tigers take on Millicent/Federals, with Tigers taking both wins.

Game one saw a pitching affair, with Millicent’s Jack Hateley and Tigers’ Karl Ransom both on song, throwing a complete seven innings each.

When the umpire called time, the barest of margins separated the sides, with Tigers taking a 2-1 victory.

Tigers welcomed back Jesse Forster to the diamond from injury and he started with a bang picking up two hits, while Jake England continued his rich vein of form since being selected in the Divison 1 side with another important hit which gave Tigers the run that mattered.

For Millicent/Federals it was Roy Hutchinson who again found himself with two big shots to left field in game one.

Millicent certainly can feel hard done by, as Brayden Morton took a screamer at centre field early to stop Millicent from emptying the bases and help Tigers take the two points.

In the second game of the night, Tigers outclassed the Bandits, putting four runs across the plate in the first inning.

They followed up with a 10-run second inning for a commanding lead and shut the door on Millicent.

While the Millicent/Federals boys did rally to bring home four runs in the fourth innings, it was all to late and the margin was simply to great, as Tigers claimed a 15-6 victory.

Big performances came from Jesse Foster, Brayden Morton, Tyler Horrigan, Matt Thompson and Karl Ransom, who combined for a huge 14 hits, while for Millicent/Federals, Jordan Johnson and Tom Winkley showed fight with the bat.
