Limited field in memorial event

ON THE MONEY: Adam Metcalfe negotiates a double jump during the John Wilsher Memorial Senior Championship at the Mount Gambier show.

JUST three riders contested the John Wilsher Memorial Senior Championship showjumping event at the Mount Gambier show on Saturday, after many competitors headed home in the morning due to the heavy showers.

As a result it was probably no surprise to see the class of Adam Metcalfe shine through.

The Echunga farrier rode his 11-year-old mare MEC Aston to good effect to claim the honours.

Metcalfe’s recent achievements include a win of the World Cup Qualifier at the last Adelaide three-day International, along with the final of the Senior SA Title last month and many Balharry Cup classes.

Metcalfe faced plenty of opposition, with Strathalbyn’s Briony Temby riding El Diablo, a nine-year-old bred by Max Schoefer, to second place.

She recently won the Grand Prix and Mini Prix at the SA State Titles in September and has won several Future Stars classes.

University student Troy Woollard was the third competitor and finished in that position, riding the 18-year-old Centago.

Woollard was a successful Young Rider (16-21yrs) and has just moved out of the Young Rider ranks in to Senior competition.

He recently won the round of the Balharry Cup at the Loxton Show and had multiple placings in the senior classes at SA state titles.
