Women beat handicaps

OPENING ROUND: Third-placed Heather Barry, winner Libby Furner and runner-up Jeannette Braun.

THE Olympic Trophy for the Mount Gambier Golf Club women kicked off with the opening round last week, with a stableford event sponsored by Lorraine Bruhn.

Despite the threat of rain – which eventuated – 33 women teed off and were forced to play in wet, cold conditions.

However, with the the course in good condition and pin placements fair, eight women played to their handicap or better, which has not been seen since last summer.

Libby Furner claimed the honours on a count-back after posting 38 points.

Her card showed no wiped holes and registered 20 points on the front nine, plus 18 on the back.

A par on the 18th hole resulted in four points to seal the win.

The unlucky Jeannette Braun lost the count-back but played exceptionally well, with 21 points on the front nine and five three-pointers.

Third place was taken out by Heather Barry, who had a great back nine of 21 points and 16 on the front.

That included seven three-pointers but six one pointers.

Eight balls were given out in the ball run-down and went to Jill Johnson, Marie Douglas, Di O’Donnell, Faye Mainwaring, Carol Davis, Bev Pedlar, Anne Schrapel and Jane Lamont.

The speciality prizes for the best back nine went to Barry in A Grade with 21 points, B Grade’s Marie Douglas 18 points and C Grade’s Anne Schrapel 18 points.
