Low numbers for qualifyers

TOP PERFORMERS: Division 2 runner-up Bev Pascoe, winner Lesley McPherson, Division 1 winner Geraldine Scott, runner-up Sue Agars.

THE quarter finals of the 2021 Open club championships were played at the Blue Lake Golf Club last week, with both division’s low on qualifiers due to unforeseen circumstances.

Division one’s Dianne Perryman played Helen Stratford with the win going to Perryman 8/7.

Stratford was hindered with the putting yipps from the outset and even though on paper the scores were not much different, Perryman, whose putting was exceptional, was able to capitalise and take the win finishing on the 12th.

She will now advance to the second semi-final to play Sue Agars.

The first semi-final will be between current club champion Josie Ashby and Rosemary Martland who both had bye’s in the quarter’s.

Both long hitters, it will all come down to the better short-gamer on the day.

Division 2 also had only one quarter final and that was between Carol Megaw and Trudy Herbert.

It was a good duel on the front nine, Megaw with the first win on the board on the first hole.

They then squared the second hole, with Herbert winning third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth.

Megaw won the fifth and ninth holes.

On the turn Herbert was 2-up then with another three wins won 5/3.

Herbert will meet Lesley McPherson in the first semi-final and Bev Pascoe, a couple of times champion in this division, will be pitted against Karen Panagopolous in only her second time in finals.

A stableford competition was held for those not competing in the championships.

Geraldine Scott was the winner in Division 1 shooting two under her handicap of 23 to post 38 points which included pars on the fifth, sixth, 15th and 16th holes, with only one wipe to finish with splits of 20/18.

Just one stroke behind in second place was Sue Agars with 37 points, with pars on the fourth, fifth and 15th holes for splits of 20/17.

In third place Jenny Medhurst had a slow start on the front nine with 16 points but made up ground on the back, with pars on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes for 20 points (36 overall).

Fiona Punton followed with 35.

Lesley McPherson survived a count-back in Division 2 from Bev Pascoe after both signed for 34 points to sit on the top of the podium.

McPherson was pleased with her game, having pars on the second, fifth, 14th and 15th holes.

Pascoe scored on every hole with splits of 17/17 including pars on the 12th and 14th.

Vivienne Wilson followed with 33 which included a four-point par on the 12th hole.

Nearest to pin second shot on the second hole winners were Josie Ashby in Division 1 and McPherson in Division 2.

“Ferret” winner’s were McPherson, Pascoe and Lee Anderson.
