Pennants up and running

WINNERS: Winners Sponsor Helen Lynch with Robe Open BPL winners Stephen Phillips, Rob Lawrie and Peter DeLaine.

A STRONG performance from Robe’s Rob Lawrie, Peter DeLaine and Stephen Phillips saw the trio claim the win in the Robe Open BPL bowls tournament on the weekend with a score of 63.5 points.

Sponsored by the Sea Vu Caravan Park and Pat and Helen Lynch, the tournament was greeted by unexpected good weather.

Kingston’s Bill Armfield, Rob Wilmont and Jack Vawser finished runners-up on 56.5 points, ahead of Robe’s Jo Sykes, Errol Jennings and Ken Smith on 53.

Raffle winners were Johnny Manz, David Bennett, Daryl Raningburg, David Reichelt and Dean Burgoyne, who enjoyed the Mahalia’s Coffee, Robetown Chocolate Factory, Robe Foodland and Robe Meat Jerky products.

Meanwhile the opening rounds of the Lower South East Bowls pennant season were played on Friday and Saturday.

Unfortunately Kingston’s women cancelled their tournament after many issues due to a Covid-19 case in Mount Gambier.

Robe’s Division 2 women started the season well with an away-win against Millicent, six points 57 shots to Millicent’s 2-41.

Judy Bermingham, Helen Dawson, Pam Robinson and Tracey Gray defeated Lurene Reinders’ team 36-17.

Valma Jennings, Bronwyn Matthews, Rosemary Williams and Barb Brown lost 21-24 to Mac MacDonald’s team after making a comeback after lunch to get in front, only to lose the last two ends to go down by three shots.

Division 3 travelled to Lucindale and went down by 11 shots – 0-39 to 8-49.

Kana Sharman’s team defeated Ann Moore’s team 27-20 and Cheryl Ferguson’s team defeated Jan Fisk’s team 22-18.

Saturday Open pennant was played home with Division 3 having a win against Naracoorte and Division 1 going down by just three shots to last year’s premiers Mount Gambier Red – 4-71 to 8-74.

In Division 1 skipper Harold Manton, Baxter Kennett, Peter DeLaine and Jim Gray had a close game with Adam Wilson’s team, coming from behind and winning on the last end with a draw from Manton.

Peter Roachock, Glenn Wright, Peter Gregory and Errol Jennings lost to Tony Bowditch’s team 27-18, while David Robinson, Dean Burgoyne, Ken Smith and Pat Lynch defeated Daniel Langdon’s team 25-20.

In Division 3 Robe defeated Naracoorte 10-87 to 2-59.

Ali Douglas, Gordon Brown, Barry Bennett and Josh Waddell had a big win against Chris Bowden’s team 40-10, Dean Woodward, Jo Sykes, Paul Truelove and Vic Dawson lost to Bev King’s team 26-21 and Deane Nankivell, Mark Murphy, Trevor Wegner and Ross Dening defeated Roger Farley’s team 26-23.

Social bowls last Thursday was sponsored by Lorraine and Ross Dening, with 30 players enjoying two games of 12 ends.

There were three two-game winners.

Winners on 57 points were Mark Murphy and the ever reliable Vic Dawson, ahead of Baxter and Peter DeLaine on 53, with Helen Dawson, Barb Brown and Paul Truelove rounding out the placings with 51.
