Golfers revel in cool conditions

ON a chilly but clear day, 32 women participated in the Harvey Day Medley three-person stableford at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.

The women enjoyed the format playing as a team, engendering a camaraderie amongst everyone in the Lois and Denise Harvey sponsored event.

The winners on a count-back were vice-captain Jan Shanahan,Vicki Clark and Helen McIntyre with 74 points.

The team members consolidated their scores, amassing 22 points on the last three holes.

McIntyre contributed nine points herself, with pars on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes.

Runners-up, also with 74 points, were Heather Teakle, Maureen Sims and Donna Jennings.

Teakle scored four points on the ninth hole with an impressive birdie.

There was acknowledgement for the best score of the day which went to McIntyre with 37 points. She was the only player to play below her handicap in the heavy conditions.

With three balls up for grabs, the pro-shot went to visitor Linda Winterborn.

The second shot on the sixth hole winners were A Grade’s Helen Gregory, B Grade’s Yvonne Shirley and C Grade’s Lois Harvey.

Collecting a ball each in the ball run-down were the teams of three – Yvonne Shirley, Marie Douglas and Anne Headlam (72 points), plus Faye Mainwaring, Heather Chapman and Di O’Donnell (69 points).

An enthusiastic Janina Morrison claimed Saturday’s stableford comeptition from a field of 14 with a consistent game to register 18 points on the front and back nines for 36 overall.

Sharon Waters claimed second place on the back of a good front nine of 21 points, plus a further 14 on the hard back nine.

Penne Saffin claimed third place with 31 points.
