SOUTH Gambier and Kybybolite sit top of the Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League ladder after keeping their respective opponents scoreless in the opening round on Sunday.

Kyby handed Millicent a 12.11-83 to nil defeat at Hatherleigh oval but it was the Demons who turned it on at Kongorong.

The host club was unable to bother the scorers either, while South kicked away to a massive 25.25-175 scoreline.

Both venues provided some entertaining football, with Hatherleigh hosting the closest game of the round.

Mundulla took on Kalangadoo in the early match, with the latter claiming the win, but not without a fight.

The Magpies led by just two points at the first break and managed to extend that in the second, taking a 3.4-22 to 2.1-13 scoreline to the long break.

Another two majors in the third term provided Kalangadoo with what appeared to be a comfortable winning total, but Mundulla was not done and hit back hard in the final stanza.

They held the Magpies to just one major score, while banging on a further three to close the margin but time ran out and Kalangadoo celebrated, with the final score 6.6-42 to 6.2-38

Kalangadoo’s Madalyn Bonanno kicked three goals and Chloe Pratt two, while for Mundulla Bree Marziale kicked two.

Best for Kalangadoo were Mikaila Pitt, Jamie Ryan, Pratt, Emmason Ilsley, Sharna Devereux and Taysha James.

Mundulla’s best were Natalie Twigden, Kellsey Hinge, Ann-Elisa Pickering, Carlee Feder and Emily Fretwell.

In the second game at Hatherleigh, Kybybolite was simply far too strong for Millicent.

One major and five minor scores in the opening term saw Kyby assert its authority but it was the second and final quarters where all the damage was done.

Better accuracy after the first break saw Kyby add four more major scores, while a further five in the final quarter saw the side run the game out in style, despite a big three-quarter-time lead, witha final score of 12.11-83 to 0.

For Kyby, Sophie Henschke kicked three goals, while Lauren Sandercock and Annabel Mould kicked two each.

Best for Kyby were Anna Hawkins, Dellie Brown, Tyler Atkinson, Mould, Ella Jones and Nancy Crawshaw.

Best for Millicent were Joanna Wilson, Ella Little, Sarah Fabris, Kelsie Wilkinson, Courtney Pond and Leila Buhlmann.

Over at Kongorong the early game provided an entertaining spectacle.

Casterton Sandford and Penola faced off, with nothing in the contest throughout the four quarters.

Penola was off to the better start, with 1.2-8 in the opening term to the Cats’ solitary minor score.

The Cats hit back somewhat in the second term but could not find the middle of the big sticks, with just three more minor scores, but holding Penola scoreless.

A major to Casterton Sandford in the third term and a minor to Penola saw the Victorians draw one point ahead but a renewed effort in the final stanza had South Australians home by eight points, with the final score 3.4-22 to 1.8-14.

Aidene Parr kicked two goals for Penola, while best players were Caroline McGrath, Alexandria Ey, Amanda Wurst, Noelle Browne and Parr.

Chloe Finnigan kicked the Cats’ only goal, while best players were Erin Munro, Emma Lynch, Erin Horsnell, Ree Humphries and Claire Nolte.

South Gambier put on a clinic in the late game against a hapless Kongorong.

From the outset it was apparent the hosts were in for a tough day at the office as Alice Tentye and Neave Delaney began to find the big sticks.

By the long break the Demons had already racked up 100 points, with the Hawks struggling to find possession in their attacking half of the ground.

Kongorong’s effort was not in doubt, but South was simply a class above as they went on to record a huge score – 25.25-175 to 0.

Of the seven South goalkickers, Tentye finished with nine, Delaney seven, Simone McDonald four and Chelsea Frost two.

Claudia Edmonds, Emma MacDonald, Tentye, Alexandra Lucas, Frost, Shelby Auld were named best.

For South, Stevi Clayton, Lexie Kermond, Evie Sealey, Jade Longbottom, Jemma Heraper and Nikki Clayton were best.
