HOLDING ON: The Mid South Football League is holding on in hope some form of season can be played in 2020, despite ongoing uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE Mid South East Football League yesterday stated it would not be cancelling the 2020 season at this stage, despite the Mid South East Netball Association calling and end to its competition this year.

Football president Peter Mitchell said the league was working with SANFL, who in turn was in close contact with the state government with the hope to play football in some form this year.

“There is a real push to try to get the winter sports up and running,” Mitchell said.

“I had a meeting with our clubs last week and went through the return-to-play protocols and other work with them.

“I painted the picture of hopefully the way forward for us.”

Mitchell said no spectators at games would be an overriding factor in the competition going ahead, but he said it was all moving in the right direction.

“My view is I would love to see the footy get going,” he said.

“But we have to work through with what SANFL comes up with the state government.

“SANFL have been pretty good and have been really trying to help.

“I’m trying to be on that journey with them.”

Mitchell said if things keep going in the same direction regarding the coronavirus situation, it looked positive for a return to play.

“We have had only one positive result the last 30 days,” he said.

“I have a follow-up meeting with SANFL (on Tuesday, June 9) and I expect there will be more information come out on that night – and before that.”

“We are getting a lot of information coming on a regular basis.

“I’m just hoping we are able to get under way.

“I think it is achievable, but it’s not my decision.”
