EVENT DROPPED: There will be no SA v Vic June long weekend race meeting at the Blue Lake BMX Club in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

THE Blue Lake BMX Club has been dealt disappointing news, with there to be no June long weekend SA v Vic race meeting this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

BMX South Australia announced on Saturday the event would be unable to go ahead in 2020, after carefully considering the current government restrictions and pandemic forecast models.

“Because it is a state event the governing body for it is BMX SA, so they have the final say on it,” Blue Lake BMX Club coach Stephen Jones said.

“They had a meeting and obviously with the way things are a decision was made that it was not viable to keep it going.”

It comes as a heavy blow for the Blue Lake BMX Club, as the June long weekend is the main event on the club’s calendar each year.

The club will now hope its state round scheduled for later in the year does not suffer the same fate.

“This year we were meant to have it (the SA v Vic) and we are meant to have the state title,” Jones said.

“Fingers crossed we still get to have the state title weekend, which is going to be in September.

“I know the state (BMX SA) is very keen to try and run a state title so it keeps rolling along and they do not miss a year.”

With the uncertainty of the pandemic Jones said it “is crystal ball type stuff” at the moment, with nobody sure how the situation will unfold over the coming months.

However, with recent news appearing positive in South Australia regarding the coronavirus, it is hoped the state round can be completed.

“It is looking promising at the moment that September might go ahead,” Jones said.

“That will be a big week of racing for the club.

“But it is hard to know.”

In the meantime, Jones said members have spent time preparing the club for when racing can resume.

“We have not sat on our hands and done nothing, we have been doing a few bits and pieces we can around the club,” he said.

“We are doing some stuff in the clubrooms, a bit of tidying up and a bit of painting while people are not around.”

Jones has also continued his “super coach” training page on Facebook, with close to 40 members in the group keeping up to date on his skill exercises and challenges.

The page has been a success so far and Jones has even been contacted by BMX Australia, which has adopted a similar program, with tutorials posted on its social media by national coaching manager Luke Madill.
