Hawker swoops on annual two-day supershoot event

SHARP SHOOTER: The 2020 Mount Gambier Gun Club two-day supershoot overall winner Ashley Hawker is congratulated by MGGC president Andrew Hoare.

THE Mount Gambier Gun Club held its annual two-day supershoot recently in favourable weather conditions.

A total of 114 dedicated trap shooters from around the country made the annual trip to the Blue Lake city and competed in six events for a share of the $20,000 worth of prizes on offer.

After early morning practice, competition started at 10am on Saturday morning and the first event was the 25-target Pointscore.

Shoot-offs were required from the outset after three shooters attained a perfect result.

Robert Clark won AA Grade with 141/141, one-target ahead of Ashley Bolwell, while A Grade honours went to Andrew Jenkins with 73/75.

B Grade was won by Stuart Bowd (81/87) and C Grade was claimed by Robert Marcato.

Shooters continued their fine form in the 25-target Single Barrel.

Ashley Hawker was the AA Grade winner with a solid 34/34, one-target ahead of Martin Collumb.

Willis Jenkins easily won A Grade with a perfect score, while B and C Grade honours were secured by Bruce Dean and Simon Lambert respectively.

The final event of the day was the 25-target Double Barrel and no less than 19 competitors shot perfect scores.

AA Grade was taken out by Bolwell with 116/116, followed by Molly Bretag one target behind.

Dale Robertson notched up the A Grade win with 33/30, while Rodney Gilcrist 25/25 and Troy Crouch 25/26 won B and C Grade respectively.

TOP PERFORMERS: The high gun winners at the 2020 Mount Gambier Gun Club two-day supershoot recently. Juniors winner Molly Bretag, AA Grade Ashley Bolwell, A Grade winner Willis Jenkins, B Grade winner Stuart Bowd, C Grade winner Mick Rudd and Veterans winner Max Medhurst.

The club team competition was also held over the three events, with teams required to have one competitor from each grade and class.

The Mount Gambier team of Gavin Height, Robertson, Bowd, Ian McArthur and Steve Chambers won the prize by eight points.

Good visibility and small winds greeted the shooters on the final day and shoot-offs were regular occurrences once again.

The 25-target Single Barrel was up first with an overall prize in memory of the late Matt Zema.

After a tight shoot-off, the title went to Stephen Holt after he shot 29/29.

In AA Grade, Lisa Smith just out shot Height, while Willis Jenkins claimed A Grade from Brian Smith.

Bowd won B Grade by a two-target margin and C Grade honours went to Andrew McKinnon.

The 25-target Pointscore was shot with enthusiasm and AA Grade was won by Bernard Pay with a perfect 84/84, one-target ahead of Barry Sims.

Brian Smith’s 74/75 proved too much for Max Pontifex in A Grade, while Val Denhe and Mick Rudd scored one-target victories in B and C Grade respectively.

The final event was the 25-target Continental and 15 shooters attained perfect scores.

Eventually AA Grade honours went to Andrew Evans with a perfect 74/74 from Bretag’s 73/74.

Brian Spring was in top form and shot 43/43 to win A Grade from Tom Clark on 42/43.

In B Grade, Bowd secured a tight win and Brodie McIntyre won C Grade with 24/26.

The overall high gun award went to Hawker after he shot 246/250 across the two days.

AA Grade was won by Bolwell with 244/250, Willis Jenkins’ 237/250 claimed A Grade, while B Grade went to Bowd’s 234/250.

Rudd claimed C Grade with 214/250, veterans went the way of Max Medhurst after he shot 244/250, while Lisa Smith’s 241/250 and Bretag’s 240/250 won women’s and juniors respectively.
