A HUGE night of racing is set down for the Borderline Speedway tonight, with three headline acts on the one card.

The 70th running of the SA Speedcar title takes centre stage, alongside round two of the Wingless Sprints Summer Slam and the time-honoured Blue Lake Classic for Street Stocks.

The speedcars – formerly midgets – are sure to provide plenty of action, with their high average speed around the clay oval.

The cars are similar in structure to Wingless Sprints, but smaller overall with a high-revving four cylinder engine.

As a state title meeting, there will be no shortage of action, which should complement the Wingless Sprints perfectly.

The Wingless Sprints provide plenty of interest for Limestone Coast speedway fans this season, with the Mount Gambier pairing of Mitchell Broome and Kirby Hillyer right at the pointy end of the Victorian Super Series.

The two have claimed race wins and podium finishes regularly this season, showing their Victorian rivals how it is done on this side of the border.

Many of those opponents will be here for tomorrow’s meeting, along with several other South Australian drivers keen to claim the honours.

While Broome has been a regular competitor for a few seasons now, Hillyer is in his second season and has surprised Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings with his sustained pace.

“Both boys came out of go karts and they were very competitive,” he said.

“The transition into a wingless sprint normally takes a couple of years and young Mitch has been doing it for a season or so.

“Kirby only started in 2018 and has surprised me because he has got to the pointy end real quick.”

Their performances have come against ex-Australian champions and other top drivers, which Jennings hopes will equate to a good showing for both on their home track.

The Summer Slam runs over three nights, with Hamilton tonight, the Borderline Speedway tomorrow night, then the final meeting in Warrnambool on Sunday.

That will ensure a quality field for tomorrow’s meeting.

“The Summer Slam always gets good fields,” Jennings said.

“There will be a lot of the drivers Mitch and Kirby compete against in the Super Series here, plus a few others from South Australia.

“It should be a great night of racing.”

To top it all off, the Blue Lake Classic is a race steeped in history.

“The street stocks have been around for 30-odd years and the Blue Lake Classic has been around for as long as I can remember,” Jennings said.

“We normally get a good field of quality competitors for that.

“We will get a lot of Victorians here and of course our local hot shots, who should be at the pointy end.”

Jennings said drivers such as the Gartners from Penola, plus Mount Gambier’s Anthony Beare, Mark Jennings and Jason Duell would all ensure a good night of racing with plenty of local interest.

“The whole night will be quality,” he said.

“We have three headline acts on the same night, all the drivers are real competitors and a lot are ex-Australian champions and the like.”

Entry for the night has been reduced to $25.
