AFTER a successful season in the Basketball SA Premier League this year, the Mount Gambier Pioneers Basketball Club is excited to announce the return of three key players for its debut in the 2020 NBL1 competition.

Emily Winter and Olivia Wormald will continue to play major roles in the Pioneers women’s side, while Brad Rathjen has resigned for the men.

Mount Gambier is working hard to put together two quality units ahead of its NBL1 debut and the trio’s commitment is a key part of its preparation.

Pioneers women’s head coach Matt Sutton said he is pleased to see Winter and Wormald return.

“It is great to have these two young players recommit to our program,” he said.

“They are team-orientated players and love the game of basketball.

“I know our basketball community will be happy to see them return.”

With an elevation to the NBL1 competition fast approaching, Sutton said he hopes the young pair can continue their improvement.

“Both have worked hard since our season finished,” he said.

“They will need to further develop their games if they want to have an impact at NBL1 level.”

Wormald said she looks forward to the challenge of playing in the new league.

“To play in the NBL1 will be an amazing opportunity,” she said.

“I know it will be a challenge, but I am working hard to develop my game and contribute for the team.”

Winter is also excited for the opportunity and is glad to continue her contribution to women’s basketball in the South East.

“It is fantastic to see women’s basketball in the region develop and I am grateful to return for another year with the Pioneers,” she said.

After a two-year stint playing football, Rathjen enjoyed a successful return to basketball with the Pioneers this year.

A solid season saw the point guard win the club’s best defensive player and golden hands awards.

Pioneers men’s coach Richard Hill is excited to continue the improvement of Rathjen’s game in 2020.

“I look forward to watching the continued growth of this mature 21 year old,” he said.

“I believe he is ready to step up another level in NBL1.”

More signings for both men’s and women’s teams can be expected over the next few weeks, as the club works towards putting two competitive sides on the floor in 2020.
