PLEASANT conditions greeted Mount Gambier and District tennis players over the weekend, as teams contested round seven of the 2019-20 season.

In the Division 3 competition Centrals maintained its spot on top of the ladder with a two-set win at home against Mil Lel Blue.

Over at West Gambier the home team also had a two-set victory when it hosted Moorak, while the remaining fixtures were won by bigger margins.

Mil Lel Green holds fourth place after a four-set victory over Mount Schank, while both Suttontown teams recorded big wins.

The Tigers defeated Glencoe/Centrals 10 sets to two, while the Hawks claimed the honours over Uniting Church nine to three.

That sees Suttontown Tigers in second place, still level on wins with their home-club rival who sit in third.

At Centrals the home team claimed the overall win thanks to the doubles results.

Both teams won three singles sets each – the closest a 7-6 win to Centrals’ Nick Thomas over Philip Pedler in the top men’s match – which saw the doubles sets decide the outcome.

Katie Gaffney was the only Centrals woman to win her singles, while she backed that up in the doubles to win all three of her matches.

The hosts went on to win four of the six doubles sets to seal the honours, with the closest match a 6-4 win to Centrals’ Nick Thomas and Mitchell van Riet over Pedler and Damian Buckley.

It was the same story for West Gambier, as its doubles matches proved to be the the winning ingredient against a visiting Moorak.

Moorak’s Christopher Tully had a good battle with West’s Mitchell Duryea in the top-order men’s singles with a 6-4 win, while the guests also claimed the bragging rights in the top women’s match, as Lousie Paltridge defeated Charli Hockey 6-4.

However, the decision came down to the doubles and a tiebreak between West’s Duryea and Henry Haywood with Tully and Aaron Pettingill could have changed the final result.

The West duo prevailed, which set them up for the overall honours.

A consistent performance from Mil Lel Green handed it the points over Mount Schank, as it won the majority of both singles and doubles to claim eight of the 12 sets.

Mil Lel’s Shaunn Robinson’s 7-5 win over Will Boston was the closest result for the day.

The remaining two match-ups on Saturday were won by the Suttontown teams in convincing fashion.

Suttontown Tigers made a solid start in the singles, dropping just one set to hold the advantage.

The doubles results were also one-sided, with just one set going the way of the guests to wrap up a successful day for the Tigers.

Suttontown Hawks travelled to Uniting Church for a similar win, which saw the hosts manage two singles wins and a doubles victory to fall by six sets.

The closest result was in the doubles, where Suttontown’s Christian McCombe and Cameron Pritchard defeated David Allen and Ian Sanderson 7-6.

This round the Division 3 fixture will be split over two days, with three matches played at Olympic Park tomorrow night and the remaining two keeping to the Saturday afternoon schedule.
