TENISON Woods College Titans basketballers ruled the court after multiple wins in the Secondary School Sports South Australia state championships last week.
The Year 8 and 9 state basketball tournament was held at Wayville Basketball Stadium and saw the college’s male team finish sixth and the female team claim the state championship title for its eighth year running.
The girls recorded a dominant 45-27 victory over Cabra Dominican College in the final.
The following day the Year 10 female team won the state final against Westminster School, its sixth consecutive state championship.
The Year 10 boys finished fifth overall.
Tenison Titans basketball coach Tom Daly said the Year 10 female team, which comprised of Year 8, 9 and 10 students, was impressive.
“Our girls showed strong physical and mental toughness, outworking the Westminster unit, which included multiple state basketballers,” he said.
“The knockout competitions began with a number of minor rounds in regional areas of South Australia.
“After winning in their region, schools then qualify for the next round of competition until eventually they progress to the state final.”
Daly said all four Tenison teams finished their minor rounds undefeated, which made them eligible for the state final.
With talented players moving up into senior year levels he said he was confident the success in the state tournament would continue into the future.
“There are a lot of talented athletes at the college, with the right people and mechanisms in place,” Daly said.
“I am sure we will see state results like this for years to come.
“These wins highlight the fact Year 6 to 10 basketball and netball programs at the college are providing key conditioning, mental toughness and basic skill development.
“These programs put the college in the best position to regularly compete with big city-based schools.”
