PENOLA’S A Grade netball team claimed a solid win over Bordertown on Saturday in round 13 of Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara netball.

An even start saw the majority of the first quarter go goal-for-goal, but the Eagles were able to capitalise on more opportunities to hold a five-goal lead at the change.

Solid defensive intercepts which transitioned well down to the goalies was key, while the accurate shooting from April Possingham and Sarah Lock helped convert onto the scoreboard.

By half time Penola held a 33-17 goal lead.

Some changes were made at the main break, as Sally Skeer switched to wing attack and coach Kaitlin Egan moved to centre.

Again, the defensive unit was relentless with some fantastic intercepts by youngster Gorgia Robbie.

Ball movement in attack looked unstoppable with Lock shooting at a precise 84pc for the match.

The goal attack finished with 25 goals for the match, while Possingham donned the shooter bib to score a solid 39 goals.

The consistent effort allowed Penola to double Bordertown’s score to win 64-32 at the final whistle.

Lock and Robbie were named as the Eagles’ best for their efforts at opposite ends of the court.

A RESERVE

PENOLA faced a tough game against fourth-placed Bordertown on the weekend, which had defeated third-placed Mundulla only the week prior.

It always promised to be a difficult match, especially in windy and cold conditions, but the Eagles were never a doubt.

They put the foot down from the first whistle and went into quarter time with an impressive 12-goal lead.

However, as the heavy rain set in Bordertown was able to win the second quarter and continued to pressure Penola into the third.

With captain Chloe Long away representing the region in zone football, Katie Dent moved into goal keeper and did a solid job, despite being unwell.

The Penola defence was in fine form and moved the ball down the court with ease, while goalies Karly Honner and Ashley Earl found the conditions tough for shooting, but were patient and reliable when it counted.

In the fourth quarter the Eagles ran away with the game and secured an eventual 21-goal victory.

Michelle Moore was best on for the match, with superb front positioning, timing and feeding to the goalies.

The team will now enjoy a break before a top-of-the-table clash against Keith in round 15.

B GRADE
PENOLA 42 d BORDERTOWN 21

IT was always going to be tough for the B Grade Penola side, as limited players hindered the team on Saturday.

However, the ladder leaders were able to overcome the odds and record a solid 21-goal win over Bordertown.

Teegan Galpin and Tayla McKeon worked hard against the physical Bordertown defenders to shoot 21 goals apiece for the match.

Hannah Klemm returned to the side after travelling and put in a best-on-court performance through the centre.

Stepping up to B Grade, Jess Lucas was not out of place and drove well at wing attack with accurate passing to the goalies.

As a result, Penola held a solid 11-goal lead by three-quarter time.

Tess Porter made her debut into seniors and played at wing attack, with a fast pace and strong support into attack.

A solid fourth term saw the Eagles break away to a 21-goal victory and remain a win clear on top of the ladder.

C GRADE
PENOLA 35 d BORDERTOWN 19

IN the cold, wind and rain, Penola’s C Grade side was able to claim a good win over Bordertown.

The Eagles adjusted to the conditions first and with good pressure over the ball created turnovers.

However, they were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard due to the blustery conditions.

As a result the scores were level at eight-all heading into the first change.

Penola lifted again in the second and third terms and was able to shake off its opponent, with a handy 18-goal lead at the final break.

From there the Eagles held back the Roosters for a 35-19 win.

A highlight of the match was the stifling defensive effort from Penola, which held Bordertown scoreless in the third term.

Jess McIntyre and Sarah Pitt were named as the Eagles’ best, but a special mention went to the Under 17’s who stepped up and performed well on the day.

17 AND UNDER
BORDERTOWN 62 d PENOLA 17

PENOLA’S 17 and Under side welcomed back Ruby Moore after several weeks off due to injury.

However, it was not a picture-perfect return, as Bordertown claimed a big win over the Eagles.

The Roosters were off to a strong start and continued their dominant form throughout the game.

To Penola’s credit its work rate and effort was 100pc and not once did it drop its heads despite the scoreline.

Kate Skeer played a consistent four quarters to earn herself the best-on-court award, while Kasey Morton played her best game of the season to also receive an award for her efforts.

16 AND UNDER
BORDERTOWN 45 d PENOLA 13

A TOUGH loss was the result of Penola’s 16 and Under round 13 clash against Bordertown.

Windy conditions made shooting a challenge and while the Penola attack came out with more intensity and drive in the second
half, the Eagles were unable to knock the Roosters off their perch.

Penola’s defence worked tirelessly all day, with Charlotte Neale awarded the best-on-court honours.

However, a 32-goal deficit remained at the final whistle.

15 AND UNDER
BORDERTOWN 41 d PENOLA 21

IN windy conditions the Eagles’ 15 and Under team flew over to Bordertown.

However, a win was not to be on the day, as the Roosters proved too strong on their home court.

Penola had a good first half with hard defence and attack on the ball.

But Bordertown pushed harder and by the end of the match had established a 20-goal lead.

Penola’s Ava Copping received the best-on-court award, with her run up and down the court and willingness to put her body on the line a highlight for the team.

Camille Queru also received mention, who has travelled to Australia from France and played her first game with the Eagles.

13 AND UNDER A
BORDERTOWN 36 d PENOLA 24

GREAT defensive pressure in the first quarter throughout the court saw both sides evenly matched, but Bordertown was too strong in the end for the visiting Penola.

The Eagles’ accuracy in goals and tight defence enabled them to hold a slim lead at half time.

However, with Bordertown making some changes at the long break, it strengthened up the centre and took the lead, eventually claiming a 12-goal victory.

Penola’s best players were Rosie Moorhouse and Charlize Bailey.

13 AND UNDER B

IT was a tough day for Penola’s 13 and Under B side, as it travelled to Bordertown on Saturday.

Although only scoring one goal, the Eagles fought hard, but lacked their usual skills.

Teegan Galpin stepped up as coach for the team on the day, while Macey O’Brien and Mia Gartner were the best players for Penola.

13MOD

THE 13MOD team welcomed Evie into its ranks on the weekend.

She stepped up to the challenge and led well, taking some good intercepts.

Jazz, Matilda and Winnie defended strongly all game, playing front and reading the ball well.

Ella, Grace, Jaeda and Evie adjusted their game to the windy weather well and found good movement in the ring.

The best-on-court awards went to Ella, Matilda and Jazz.
