Penola establishes early lead to claim victory over Demons

A GRADE – PENOLA 78 d NARACOORTE 42

PENOLA’S A Grade netball team continues to show solid 2019 form, with a good win over Naracoorte in round 10 of Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara netball on Saturday.

The Eagles were off to a good start with tight defensive pressure earning them the first seven goals of the match.

They maintained that scoreboard pressure for the first half and had a solid lead at the main break.

Penola maintained the intensity into the second half and by the final whistle had established a 36-goal margin.

April Possingham and Sarah Lock were accurate in goals all day, with the former shooting at 90pc to score 54 from 60 attempts.

Lock was also on target to shoot at 75pc and help the Eagles to its solid 78-goal total.

Alana Winter was relentless all day and she combined well with Brooke Klemm to cause multiple turnovers.

As a result, the two were named as the Eagles’ best players on the day.

A RESERVE – PENOLA 69 d NARACOORTE 30

PENOLA’S A Reserve side claimed a solid win over Naracoorte on Saturday to maintain its undefeated record for 2019.

The Eagles went into the clash knowing they should never the eighth-placed Demons, but in the end the hosts were just too strong.

Despite a six-goal lead at quarter time, Penola was not fully capitalising on its solid defensive work when the ball hit the attack line.

However, the Eagles stretched the lead to 13 at half time, before a big third-quarter effort.

The third term was the highlight of the match, as Penola shot a whopping 21 goals to Naracoorte’s five.

That set up the big win and at the end of play the Eagles secured a 39-goal win.

In another good team performance, it was the agile Chelsea Bradley who stood out from the pack in

defence to receive best on, while Ashley Earl was also a highlight, as she positioned herself well and shot accurately.

She finished the match with 46 goals from 55 attempts.

This week the Eagles hit the road for a tough game against fourth-placed Lucindale.

B GRADE – PENOLA 44 d NARACOORTE 43

IT was a nail-biting finish to the B Grade clash between Penola and Naracoorte, as it came down to one goal in the end.

The Eagles rose to the occasion to claimed the win, but the Demons proved they could be a surprise package despite sitting outside the top five.

Naracoorte came out firing from the first whistle to take an early lead, which it maintained for most of the game.

From there Penola tried several changes to try and turn the tide, but were forced to play catch-up netball.

It was not until the last quarter the Eagles were able to find another gear and claim the lead.

Kerry Dent’s defence was outstanding all day and she can be credited with her team’s one-goal win.

She was joined by Tayla McKeon, who also received Penola’s second best player award.

C GRADE – NARACOORTE 34 d PENOLA 29

A HARD-fought game saw Penola’s C Grade team go down to Naracoorte by five goals on Saturday.

The Eagles stepped up and played hard, but was unable to come away with the win.

A solid game from Millie Wilkinson saw her named as Penola’s best, as she led well and went hard for the ball.

Sarah Pitt defended well and took home second best.

17 and UNDER – NARACOORTE 90 d PENOLA 19

NARACOORTE was too strong for Penola’s 17 and Under side, as the Demons claimed a massive 81-goal victory over the Eagles.

The first quarter saw Naracoorte take the lead and that was how it remained for the rest of the game.

A new goalie combo of Kate Skeer and Anna Marcus saw the Eagles try out some new moves.

The second half was led by Shakayla Summerhayes who continued to develop her game and take countless turnovers, but it was not enough to account for the quick-moving Demons.

Summerhayes was Penola’s best for the match, while Kasey Morton was second best.

16 and UNDER – NARACOORTE 57 d PENOLA 23

THE Under 16’s came up against a solid Naracoorte team on Saturday, with the Eagles unable to match their opponent.

It took time for Penola to settle which saw the Demons claim a strong lead in the early stages.

The Eagles improved in the third term, but a lack of on-court communication saw Naracoorte come away with a convincing win.

Maddie Copping was Penola’s best player, as she put in 100pc all day, while Ella Hutchesson also worked hard in defence to also receive a mention.

15 and UNDER – PENOLA 49 d NARACOORTE 28

IN freezing conditions, Penola’s Under 15 girls came out firing to set up a good win over Naracoorte.

Good passing, strong defence and accurate finishes saw the Eagles off to a solid start.

To the Demons’ credit, they came out strong in the second half with solid shooting, but Penola held strong in the final stanza to come home with a good win.

Skye Flint earned the best player award for her strong drives and good passing into the ring, while Kasey Venables shot well to be named as second best.

13 and UNDER A – PENOLA 43 d NARACOORTE 28

A FROSTY start to the match saw players take time to warm up, but Penola’s 13 and Under A’s soon gained the lead.

The Eagles extended the margin at every break and by the final whistle held a 15-goal advantage, but it did not come easily.

The opening half saw a tight contest and the game remained up for grabs, until Penola settled into its positions pushed ahead in the second half.

Asha Messenger and Amber Morton were the Eagles’ best players on the day.

13 and UNDER B – NARACOORTE d PENOLA

PENOLA’S 13 and Under B team made their coach proud on Saturday, despite a loss to Naracoorte.

The match showcased how far the young Eagles had progressed since the start of the season, with the determination for the ball clear to see with strong leads.

Penola moved the ball from end to end fluently, but unfortunately it was not quite enough on the day.

In a solid team performance it was cousins Charlize Bailey and Lucy Lambert who received the coach’s award.

Bailey’s intercepts appeared effortless and Lambert ran all day to find
