PENOLA Croquet Club is throwing its doors open to anyone who would like to learn the game of golf croquet.

The club will begin the different style of the sport in the hope to attract new people and enjoy the shorter format of the game.

Penola croquet coordinator Pat Boyd said the golf croquet style had proved popular over the years and is played around the world.

She said it is a much gentler form of croquet, which involves all players together.

“Association croquet can be quite involved,” she said.

“Golf croquet is good for those who do not understand the intricacies of the sport or may have physical limitations.

“It is a more relaxing game and anyone from about five years of age can play.

“I know one man who is 92 years old and plays.”

Boyd said in the Association form of the game players had to wait until someone made a mistake before they could take to the green, but in the golf format that was not the case.

“Everyone is involved all the time,” she said.

“All players are on the green together and take turns hitting the ball, which makes it quite popular.”

Boyd said another part of the game which was popular was the mixed format, with both men and women on equal footing.

“I find sometimes the women play better because they can have better eyes for it.

“It is about being precise – you can only hit the ball so hard before it goes out of bounds.”

Tuition will be available for those who do not know much about the sport, with Boyd qualified to teach the game and other members with plenty of experience to help along the way.

At this stage games will begin at 10am every Saturday morning, starting tomorrow.

Equipment will be available, with those interested simply needing flat shoes and $5 for green fees.
