IT was a tough task to pick one footballer for the first K&S Fuels player of the week, with a range of options in the opening round of the Western Border Football League.

The award goes to a player who may have achieved a milestone, put in a big performance or just did something exciting or unusual on the day.

The kick after the siren by East Gambier recruit Shaun King was certainly one which sprung to mind.

The Bulldogs faced a reinvigorated West Gambier at Malseed Park and there was nothing in the game for the entire four quarters.

With just seconds on the clock King marked in front of goals, but a fair distance out, with the Bulldogs down by one point.

The siren sounded and he calmly slotted the goal home to win.

Down at Blue Lake Sports Park there were many players who stood tall for South Gambier as they claimed the points from Casterton Sandford in a late rush.

That included Brayden Kain with six goals and several youngsters such as Kaleb Bowd and Todd Reid, who played beyond their years to see the Demons home.

However, a big performance on the weekend came from North Gambier coach Justin McConnell.

McConnell returned to the helm of North this season and had an instant impact.

Last year the Tigers won just three games, but in round one they made short work of Millicent, after the reigning premiers held a slender two-point lead at the long break.

North then ran rampant in the third term, with nine major scores to blow the game open.

McConnell directed his players, but also banged on eight goals himself to help the side to a dominant 64-point win.

For his efforts he receives the first K&S award of the season.
