MOUNT Gambier speedway driver Mitchell Broome completed the Austrlaian Wingless Sprints championships at Warrnambool on the weekend with a credible seventh-place finish.

Broome gave the main contenders a run for their money, with his team drawing numerous positives from what was an impressive weekend.

Having raced at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway on several occasions in the past, Broome felt confident heading into what was his second Australian Championship attempt.

With his confidence intact following a win in his opening heat race, Broome went on to place fourth in his second heat race, which was enough to qualify him into preliminary feature race one.

Driving the race of his career, Broome pushed forward from his fifth-place starting position to greet the chequered flag in an impressive second, which secured him a place in the feature race.

Another solid drive in the A Scramble to place fourth cemented Broome’s feature race starting position and from there, it was all systems go for the 40-lap Australian championship decider.

While he could not maintain his position in the strong field, Broome was able to hold on for seventh place.

“I’m very happy with our Australian championship result and the whole weekend has really given us a confidence boost for the rest of the season,” he said.

“I knew my team had given me a solid car heading into the event and it would be up to me to make the most of it and I really feel I was able to do that.

“Saying thank you to my family, crew and sponsors does not really cut it, because none of this would have been possible without them.”

Broome now heads to the Borderline Speedway Saturday night for the fourth Australia Super Series round and will hope to consolidate his current top-10 position in the points standings.
