Shooters set sights on city event

THE Mount Gambier Gun Club held its annual two day super-shoot recently, with Andrew Evans claiming the overall AA Grade high-gun honours.

Evans won with a score of 241/250 closely followed by runner-up Aaron Zupanic who shot 239/250.

The overall A Grade winner could not be decided after Mathew Robinson and Heath Telford tied with a score of 222/250.

B and C Grade was won by Steve Bowley 217/250 and Bruce Dean 202/250 respectively, while Max Medhurst 231/250 claimed the veterans category, Molly Bretag 214/250 won the women’s competition and Tristan McKinnon 204/250 was the best of the juniors.

A total of 115 competitors from across Australia set their sights on $20,000 worth of prizes on offer across the two days of shooting.

The first event of the weekend was the 25 target point-score where Dougal Simson shot a perfect score of 75/75 to win the AA Grade, just one shot ahead of Evans who started off his successful campaign well.

A Grade went to Willis Jenkins with 72/75, ahead of Robert Crane with 70/75.

Rick Zupanic claimed B Grade with 70/75, while Chelsea McKinnon was best in C Grade with 67/75.

Ashley Bolwell won the AA Grade in the following 25 target event with 32/33, while eventual overall A Grade winner Telford was just one shot away from beating Phillip Mules, who claimed the A Grade with 25/27.

Eventual overall B and C Grade champions Bowley and Dean got their first wins of the weekend.

The shooters found their form by the final event of the day as nine competitors shot perfect scores in the 25 target double barrel.

Simson shot his second perfect score in a row to defeat Evans by one in AA Grade and Robinson scored his first win in A Grade.

McKinnon suffered a narrow one-shot defeat to John Taarnby in B Grade, while in C Grade Dean picked up the win.

Saturday saw a team competition run over the three events, which was won by Mount Gambier’s Tom Jenkins, Mathew Robinson, Tristan McKinnon, Mick Rudd and Willis Jenkins, who scored 20 more points than any other combination across the day.

Sunday saw slightly more wind for the shooters to tackle, but it did not stop Peter Attard from shooting a perfect score to claim the overall win in the day’s first event, which was in memory of the late Matt Zema.

Aaron Zupanic defeated Warren Linder by one shot in the AA Grade and A Grade was claimed by Scott Davis.

B Grade went to Zupanic, while Ricki Kelly claimed C Grade.

The next event saw a remarkable 75/75 score from Graham Menhennet to defeat an unlucky Evans (92/93) in AA Grade, while the next highest winning score was 72/75 from Gary Jennings in A Grade.

Grant Carter claimed the B Grade honours, while Malcolm Williamson was best in the C Grade.

The last event of the two-day super-shoot saw 11 shooters attain perfect scores and the 25 target continental was claimed by Simson, who shot 48/48 to win the AA Grade.

Robinson shot a perfect 25/25 to claim A Grade, while Rick Zupanic was victorious in B Grade, also with a perfect 25/25 and Mick Rudd shot 22/25 to claim C Grade.

Robinson tied overall in the A Grade high gun standings with Telford.
