Roos wounded in one-sided affair

PENOLA completed round seven of Barber Shield cricket on Saturday with another victory, after claiming the first-innings honours comfortably over West Gambier at McCorquindale Park.

The win was set up on the first day of play, with a solid century to David Somerfield, which saw the Eagles set an imposing 286 runs for a Roos victory.

But day two saw little joy for West, all out in the 63rd over for just 145 runs.

The problems began early in the run chase, with Connor Prior out on the opening day with the total at just 16.

Niall Easterbrook and Nick Bone looked to move the score along, but with 42 on the board Bone was caught off a Michael Waters delivery for just three runs.

Only five runs were added before Easterbrook also departed, caught and bowled by Waters, who had then claimed the first three scalps of the innings.

Sam Willis and Bowen Hosking were left to settle the innings and added a small 22-run partnership, with Willis caught off Conrad Slabber for a handy 18 runs.

From there the Roos seemed to be back on track, with Jake Blackwell offering some resistance to pick up the run rate.

He and Hosking put on a handy half-century stand, before Blackwell was sent back to the shed – lbw to Jack Mullan – with 33 to his name.

At 5/125 there was still some hope to reach the target, but that was soon put to rest, when the remaining wickets fell for 20 runs.

Richard Crute was caught off Somerfield for just four runs, Josh Cornolo went lbw to Somerfield for a duck, while Jack Geddes went for the same score, clean bowled by Mullan.

Trueman Schrader was run out and Michael Prior was caught off another Somerfield delivery.

Hosking remained unbeaten on 39.

Somerfield and Waters shared the spoils with three wickets each.

Penola then returned to the middle for a second innings and Somerfield duly put together another half-century.

This time he managed 85 off 75 deliveries, with five fours and three sixes to show his current form.

Mullan was unlucky to fall short of his milestone, bowled by Bone for 42.

The Eagles have shot clear at the top of the ladder, the only side to remain undefeated this season and the only side to claim an outright victory.
