WINNING COMBINATION: Mount Gambier Bowls Club women’s championship fours winners Leanne Hentschke, Marika Heaver, Di Harris and Cathy McCarthy after the weekend’s final.

LAST weekend the Mount Gambier Bowls Club saw it’s members compete in the club championship fours.

In the women’s championship the final was played between the team of Cathy McCarthy, Di Harris, Marika Heaver and skipper Leanne Hentschke against Bev Neave, Mavis Edgecombe, Barb

Butchart and skipper Margaret Marshall after they had close semi-final wins over Bec Gruar and Beryl Versluis led teams respectively to make the final.

The final saw Hentschke, Heaver, Harris and McCarthy easily account for their Neave, Edgecombe, Butchart and Marshall opposition to win the Mount Gambier Bowls Club women’s four’s champions.

The men’s championship had sectional play with the teams led David Babb, Greg Carpenter, Jeff England and Tony Bowditch winning their section to make the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals England’s four defeated Babb’s team by two shots, while Carpenter’s crew won by six shots over Bowditch’s side to result in a England and Carpenter match up for the final.

The final was played on Friday night and lived up to expectations as a enthralling contest played out.

Little could separate the Jeff England led team of Eddie Otter, Steve Farrell and John Reppin from defending champions Carpenter, Terry Bruhn, Gary Hocking and Peter Radley.

In the end it was England’s four who were victorious by two shots in a thrilling final to be crowned the Mount Gambier Bowls Club men’s championship four’s winners.
