VICTORY: Luke Storer heads for victory lane after claiming round one of the Wingless Sprints Summer Slam Friday night at the Borderline Speedway.

THE Borderline Speedway hosted round one of the Wingless Sprints Summer Slam on Friday night, with interest for Limestone Coast fans in the form of Mitchell Broome and Kirby Hillyer.

As is usually the case in the category, some close racing was enjoyed throughout the night, with Broome and Hillyer keen to make their mark on their home track.

Both were on the pace in their first heat to finish at the pointy end of the field.

In his next heat Broome drove from the back of the field to a race win and set up his pole position in the A main feature, while Kirby would start further down the field.

Meanwhile Luke and Daniel Storer showed plenty of pace throughout the heats, as did Dayn Bentvelzen, Luke Weel and Alex Ross.

The A Main was set for an epic battle, with Broome off the front alongside Luke Storer, with Ross further down in seventh place.

Broome led the field for much of the early going, despite a couple of false starts which kept the pressure on.

Storer continued to apply the blow torch, desperately looking for a way around, while Broome controlled the race at the front, using the low side of the track through the corners well.

A spin on lap 20 closed the field up and the whole race was about to change as a result.

Soon after the restart Storer, Weel and Ross moved past, with Broome spinning out of turn four and heading to the back of the field.

Back at the front and the battle was on in earnest, with Storer, Weel and Ross pushing hard.

In the end Storer did enough to claim the honours, while Ross claimed second place from Weel.
