LIGHT COMPETITION: Ian Harris and Paul Freeman pull the final arrows from the target face after Sunday’s lightly-attended archery event.

BLUE Lake Archers committed to various pre-Christmas activities resulted in a small field for Sunday’s outdoor archery round.

Four of the club’s members were available and the pleasant afternoon weather was a good opportunity to start ramping up the match fitness for the rapidly approaching tournament weekend in mid-January.

A Brisbane round covers the same set of four distances as those used in the tournament and the same number of arrows require scoring, which made an ideal preparation round.

When the range was set up three of the archers were able to start the event, the fourth finding changes to his bow after the last event needed to be sorted on the practice target.

The 70-metre range was fruitful for Ben Kilsby, who landed three all-gold ends.

That continued into the 60-metre range, with another two top ends.

Ian Harris and Paul Freeman did not have as much luck, as Kilsby slipped into the distance on the score sheets.

After the mid-event break the distance dropped to 50 metres and Graham Lock joined in as a non-scoring participant on the main range, with his bow sorted out.

Kilsby was an unexpected retirement during the 50-metre section and Freeman was plagued by a bow sight problem, which allowed Harris back into the game.

Harris collected an all-gold end when the range dropped to 40 metres, which helped him finish the day with the top off-the-bow score.

Freeman had done enough early to keep Harris at bay once the handicap margins were added in, with enough points on the board to continue his run of recent wins.

RESULTS

Brisbane outdoor round, handicap scored, benchmark 900 points: Paul Freeman 1102 (off the bow 934); Ian Harris 1079 (946); Ben Kilsby 659 (retired).
