Port MacDonnell hosts sailing challenge

SOLID EFFORT: Dennis Illman and Andrew Kriesl sail Mirage to handicap honours during the Port MacDonnell Sailing Club’s Inter-club challenge with Rivoli Bay Sailing Club on the weekend.

THE Port MacDonnell Sailing Club’s season continued on Saturday with races three and four completed in good conditions for the inter-club challenge with the Rivoli Bay Sailing Club.

Each race saw 10 starters, with five catamarans and five monohulls, including three boats from Rivoli Bay – One Toy Too Many with Brad Mann, Lethal Weapon with Daryl Brooksby and Serenity with Evan Steele.

Both races were run separately over the same course, except for an extra lap for the catamarans.

Line honours for monohulls in Race 3 went to Salt Peter skippered by Robin White, with Bob Bamford and Sharon White, while first on class basic and club handicap was Mirage skippered by Dennis Illman with Andrew Kriesl, closely followed by Far-Mer in second position, skippered by Dave Evans, with Jen Jones and Neill Thompson

In Race 4 line honours went to Farr-Mer, with Evans also claiming the class basic and club handicap honours from Mirage, turning the tables from the Race 3 result.

For the catamarans Mann took One Toy Too Many to victory in Race 3, ahead of Greg Graham’s I Was Once.

Race 4 saw Graham claim the honours ahead of Serenity.

The next inter-club challenge is set down for February 9, 2019.

On the weekend the club also welcomed Tom Paltridge on his own boat Fumac, with crew member Stella Harfield.

Competition continues tomorrow with the first races of the 25-foot challenge.

Race officer will be Nick Watson and members will be at the clubhouse from around 11am.

Anyone interested in sailing is encouraged to drop in to the clubrooms on Sea Parade at Port MacDonnell or message the club via Facebook.
