CONSISTENCY: Penola’s Dave Somerfield claimed two wickets with the ball last week and will hope to back up that performance when he returns to the crease in day two of the Eagles’ clash with South Gambier. Picture: KATIE JACKSON

WITH the first-innings points wrapped up, Penola will chase an outright victory when it returns to the crease against South Gambier today at McCorquindale Park.

The Eagles knocked over the Demons for a lowly 59 runs on day one of their Barber Shield cricket clash last week, before going in to bat and returning 4/89 at the day’s close.

Lewis March opened with 21 runs to start the runs flowing, while Jase Bateman added another 28 to the total before he was dismissed.

Currently Dave Somerfield stands at 22-not-out and he will be joined at the crease by Sam Klemm, unbeaten on eight overnight.

Somerfield finished up with two wickets on day one, which he will hope to back up with the bat, while Klemm is out to prove his worth in the A Grade scene.

They will look to bolster Penola’s score and with the likes of George Kidman – who has posted consistent runs so far this season – still to come, the Eagles should be on their way to setting a solid total.

An outright victory will be on their mind and should they declare and bring South back in to bat, should have no trouble knocking the Demons over for another low score.

For the Demons, they will look to their bowlers to hold the Eagles at bay, with Camron Jorgenson taking two wickets last week.

He will hope to add to his count, while Robbie Drenthen and Luke Zadow stand with a wicket each and will also want to perform.

David Vine has been in devastating form with the ball early this season, but is yet to bag a scalp from his seven overs.

He has eight wickets from the three games this season and will want to uphold his form with another bag.

However, Penola will make South work hard for its wickets and has been consistent across both disciplines this season.

The Eagles will not bow down easily and South will have an almost impossible task on its hands if it is to undo the damage done in day one.
