MIL LEL secured first-innings points in the weekend’s Barber Shield cricket round when it fired with the ball against East Gambier, knocking the Bulldogs over for just 78 runs.

That result came in just the 36th over, with Mil Lel then taking to the crease at its home venue of Frew Park to post a winning 8/99 before the day was done.

Mil Lel captain Craig Lock was in blinding form with the ball and a purple patch saw him finish the day with a five-wicket haul.

Was it not for 35 runs from Dion Stratford, the Bulldogs could have been in even more trouble, with his score making up almost half of the total.

He opened with the bat opposite Kyal Chapman, but the partnership was short.

With five runs on the board Chapman was caught by Carey Megaw off youngster Ben Thiel with four runs of his own, while Ash Dumigan then joined Stratford at the crease.

However, Dumigan was also dispatched without doing any damage, when he was clean bowled on one run by Jonathan Allcock.

With 14 runs on the board Alex Hentschke stepped up, but scored only four runs before he was caught by Thiel off Jack Miller.

On the other hand, Stratford remained strong and his partnership with the incoming Emerson Marks was East’s best on the day.

The two added 44 runs to the total, before Stratford was bowled by Lock in the 27th over when the total was at 63.

Lock found his groove in that over and quickly dispatched Alex Pfeifer and Connor Little as well, without the Bulldogs making a single run.

Nathan Gore then joined Marks at the crease and they added just 11 runs to the total before Lock struck again, with a fifth clean bowl sending Marks back to the bench with 11 to his name.

Simon Golebiowski was up next, but was sent packing for three runs, while an lbw saw youngster Luke Allen fail to score.

Thomas Miles joined Gore at the crease, but a catch from Justin Lamont off youngster Tom Nieuwerkerk saw the latter dismissed with the final total at 78.

Lock led the way with ball in hand, finishing with five wickets from seven overs, while Nieuwerkerk claimed two scalps and Thiel, Allcock and Miller bagged one each.

Mil Lel then came in to bat and going into day two sits at a winning total of 8/99.

East young guns Allen and Marks finished day with two scalps each on Saturday, but it was not enough to deny the hosts a first-innings victory.
