Speedway celebration on track

REIGNING CHAMPION: Mount Gambier’s Anthony Beare will look to kick off his first home race tomorrow night in style in the 50th anniversary of Speedway Sedans in Australia.

A BIG opening night of racing is set for the Borderline Speedway tomorrow with the meeting designed to showcase the history of Speedway Sedans in Australia.

The 50th anniversary of the sport sees a season of celebration, which kicked of recently in Western Australia.

Speedway Sedans were originally called Hot Rods, then formed an organisation known as the Australian Saloon Car Federation.

That later became what is now known as Speedway Sedans Australia.

A full program is on the card tomorrow night, which includes Street Stocks, Super Sedans, Junior Sedans and Classic Sedans.

Overall close to 60 drivers have entered for the night, which should provide an entertaining and though-provoking meeting.

A mix of Classic Sedans sees 11 entries, which includes FJ and EH Holdens, Valiant Chargers, Holden Toranas, a Ford Zepher and a Ford Customline.

Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said he was pleased to see such a big field in the category, which he said would bring many fond memories back for spectators.

He recalled running an FE Holden himself “back in the day” and was keen to see the old machinery complete demonstration runs on the night.

The main event – the Street Stocks – sees 31 cars entered in what forms part of the MJS Street Stock Series.

That includes Mount Gambier’s own national champion Anthony Beare, plus former national title holders, Brad McClure, Rhys Heinrich and fellow Limestone Coast drivers Mark Jennings, Jason Duell, Jeremy Weston and Jayden Edwards.

Penola will also be represented, with Steven and Mark Gartner taking to the track.

That event in itself will be worth the entry fee, with the national championships less than six months away.

Likewise the Super Sedans are sure to put on a good show.

Last year’s state title was cancelled due to the weather and will run at the Borderline Speedway on November 24.

That means all competitors will be keen to put on a good show and familiarise themselves with the circuit before the big event.

Current state champion, Penola’s Dave Gartner, will headline that category among a field of seven.

And the Penola drivers continue in the Junior Sedans class, with Brad and Sam Gartner, while Ryan Harry will fly the flag for Mount Gambier.

The venue itself in in perfect condition, after last season’s improvements have had extra time to settle in.

It promises to be a big night of racing to kick off another action-packed season at the picturesque track.

Racing kicks off at 6pm.
