Archers enjoy jam-packed weekend

TAKING AIM: Paul Freeman lines up the target in a Blue Lake Archers outdoor round at Corriedale Park.

INDOOR, outdoor and field archery attracted Blue Lake Archers members this week.

Friday night the club ran an indoor round, while on Sunday the members had the choice of the local outdoor target or a trip to visit The Greater Hamilton Archers club who ran a field archery round as part of the South West Games.

Ben Kilsby elected for the indoor and field archery option and was rewarded with a win in one of the indoor rounds, before a solid third place in the field event competing in the Open Male Compound Bow division.

Friday night a pair of 18-metre Australian indoor rounds were programmed in.

Round 1 was a tight contest as the four archers competing finished with a spread of just five points across the group.

A count-back was required to define the winner as both Paul Freeman and Kilsby carded an adjusted score of 295 points.

The win was awarded to Kilsby with his superior tally of 10-point arrows.

The close result pushed the archers tostrive for better results in Round 2.

Kilsby found and extra four points with a streak of three perfect 60-point ends.

Garry Jacques found a couple of extra points and overtook Graham Lock.

Freeman produced the best gain, scoring an extra seven points to run out the winner by three points over Kilsby.

Sunday the local outdoor range was the scene of a World Archery 60-metre, 90-arrow round.

While the sunshine and temperature were comfortable, the wind was the proverbial fly in the ointment.

An unpredictable crosswind pushed the archers aim off and kept the final scores below the adjusted benchmark.

Not to be intimidated by the breeze, Len Bayley and Freeman locked horns in the race for superiority.

Freeman held the upper hand early in off-the-bow scores including picking up an all-gold at 60 metres.

Bayley made a late charge at the final 40 metre distance but was not in a position to post a serious challenge as Freeman logged another win, a comfortable 26 points ahead of Bayley.
