Lakers charge through

ANOTHER victory can be expected tomorrow night when the Mount Gambier Lakers head to Warrnambool to face the Seahawks in Round 3 of the Country Basketball League.

The Lakers have been untouchable so far this season after three games, defeating the Geelong Supercats in a tight Round 1 game, before easily accounting for the Terang Tornadoes the same weekend.

Last week the Lakers hosted the Hamilton Hurricanes at the Icehouse and put on a clinic, running away with the game early and building on their superiority as it went on.

Tomorrow’s game will pose a big test for the win-less Seahawks, even on their home court.

So far Warrnambool has not looked like claiming a win, with a big Round 1 loss to Bellarine Storm, followed by a similar result the following week against the Ararat Redbacks.

While the Lakers are yet to settle on a solid roster, that made little difference last round, despite the lack of coach Kane de Wit on the floor.

Gone also from the opening round was Simon Berkefeld, but the Lakers still controlled the contest.

Six of the seven players reached double figures, with Sam Stafford and Matt Berkefeld topping the score sheets with 23 points each.

Lachie Hunter used his size well under the hoop and promises to provide that extra height needed during the season.

The Seahawks struggled in the opening round, with only one player in double figures, while they fared better last week, with four players achieving that goal.

However, they still only managed 68 points and gave up 108 to the Redbacks.

Against the Storm in the opening round they could only find 52 points and gave up 115.

For the Lakers only the Supercats threatened, scoring 91, while the Lakers managed 101 for the win.

The remaining two games saw the Tornadoes with just 65 points and the Hurricanes with only 55.

A solid defensive game has served the Lakers well so far and with a full roster still to come, they should continue to improve.

The following week the Lakers face the win-less Portland Coasters, but from there the competition picks up, with the third placed Storm, followed by the second placed Horsham Hornets – also unbeaten after three games.

Those two games will surely test the Lakers, but for now they simply have to focus on a road trip to Warrnambool to return victorious and remain untouched at the pointy end of the ladder.
