Blue Lake archer on target despite niggling equipment issue

STRAIGHT SHOOTING: Phil Tremelling had his recurve bow on song, with this group of arrows netting him 59 points from a possible 60 during the 50 metre range.

MEMBERS of Blue Lake Archers competed at both local and state level in recent events.

The South Australian State Outdoor Target championship was held at the Archery South Australia Adelaide hills Mylor oval venue.

Ben Kilsby was the local club’s only competitor this year.

Graham Lock attended, but was the director of shooting for the event.

Kilsby competed in the most competitive division, the open male compound, which required the archers to start at 90 metres in a World Archery round of 144 scored arrows.

Kilsby was hampered by a niggling equipment problem, but dug deep to score a new personal best for the round and claimed a fifth placing in the high-quality field.

Locally, at the same time the state championship was running, the club ran a Melbourne round.

The 50-metre event was held in good spring conditions where Len Bayley and Paul Freeman tussled throughout the day for the top spot.

Freeman gained the best off-the-bow score, but could not match Bayley’s effort of a new PB.

At the end of the day there was only five points the difference as Bayley took home the adjusted score win over Freeman.

Over the most recent weekend a WA 60/900 was chosen as the round for the day.

The near perfect weather was the catalyst for a couple of excellent results as a pair of PB’s tumbled.

A field of four, plus two beginners, were present on the Corriedale Park archery range.

Best off-the-bow score looked like another to head Freeman’s way as Lock struggled to overcome a slow start at the 60-metre distance.

Phil Tremelling put his best foot forward with his recurve bow, equalling the best efforts of his compound-bow-equipped fellow competitors.

With 59 points from a possible 60 during one of the 50-metre ends, Tremelling was on track for a good showing towards the end of the day.

Best off-the-bow score went narrowly Lock’s way after a late comeback, but it was a tie at the front of the adjusted scores that stole the show.

Tremelling and Freeman had both carded new PB’s and both had adjusted scores of 911 points.

A count-back of arrows that had scored the maximum 10 points gave the win to Freeman.
