Top week on green for seaside club

PORT MacDonnell Bowling Club is now in full swing, with pennant bowling back on the greens.

Last week’s social bowls saw 29 competitors take part, four teams winning two games.

Rod Sutton and Bill McGregor claimed the honours, ahead of Kevin Henderson’s pair, with John Broadbent’s side rounding out the placings.

Winner of the phantom draw was Peter Bruhn.

FRIDAY PENNANT

IN the opening round of pennant bowls, Division 1 hosted Naracoorte on Friday, where Lyn Vanderley, Barbara Milstead, Jan Dowdell and Joy Bilney played Sandra Williams, Christine Johnson, Suzanne Bennett and Christine Murphy.

In a sea-sawing contest, Port MacDonnel led by one shot after the 15th end, then were down by seven on the 21st.

However, the side scored 10 shots over the last four ends to take the win 26-23.

Sharon Perryman, Robyn Burley, Carol Schmidt and Judy Grosvenor played Jennifer Measday, Jan Munn, Bev King and Dianne Brown.

The Port MacDonnell side was off to a good start, but once Naracoorte found form, it started to peg the lead back and by the lunch break was only five shots behind.

A tense finish saw the visitors score six shots to draw level 26 all.

The overall win went to Port MacDonnell by three shots.

Division 2 travelled to the Mount Gambier RSL where Rod Sutton, Colleen Tarca, Elaine Pruis and Roma Henderson took on Edna Eldridge, Wynne Turner, Janet Forster and Margaret Finnis in a fairly even match, with only one shot the difference at the lunch break.

The RSL team scored 10 shots to Port MacDonnell’s seven and held on for the win by two shots, 22-20.

Lyn Jones, Marilyn Sutton, Val Praetz and Jennie Tilley played Kath Hearne, Carmel McQuade, Liz Schroder and Lyn Chirgwin.

After a fairly even match the Bay was up by two after 15 ends.

Port MacDonnell scored better during the afternoon and led 26-15 after the 22nd end, only to see RSL score eight shots over the next two ends and hold two or three shots on the last end.

However Port MacDonnell was able to take the shot and the win 27 -23.

The overall result went to port MacDonnell by two shots.

Division 3 hosted Mount Gambier, where Suzanne Connell, Karen Petersen, Shirley Taylor and Heather Fox played Di Mitchell, Emma Freemantle, Bev Neave and JaneLee Calleja.

At the lunch break Port MacDonnell led by four shots and continued to stay ahead, scoring on eight ends to Mount Gambier’s four.

Alison Mitchell, Terry Stone, Sharon Bruhn and Cheryl Doddridge met Mavis Edgecumbe, Sharon Time, Nelda Earl and Janice McCarthy.

Port MacDonnell struggled early, eight shots to 21 down after 15 ends.

However, they came back strong in the second part of the game, scoring 11 shots two.

The overall four-shot win went to the home side.

SATURDAY OPEN PENNANT

THE Saturday open pennant saw Division 1 head to Millicent, where Greg Fisher, Rod Sutton, Peter Bruhn and Adam Wilson played Wayne Ross, Paul Scanlon, John Scudds and Iain Campbell.

In a tight result, Port MacDonnell went down by just one shot.

Judy Grosvenor, Chris Richards and Marcus Pietersma took on Lindsay Warneke, Lyn Scudds, Neil Whelan and Terry Barnes.

This game went the Bay’s way 22-14.

Barbara Milstead, Joy Bilney, Ron Cox and Bill Richards played Alan Correll, Dirk Pietersma, Ron Gibbs and Bryan Roperbut went down 22-30.

Millicent won the game by one shot overall 64/14 to Port MacDonnell 63/2.

Division 2 hosted Kingston, with John Broadbent’s four up against the Brian Emery skipped side and finished the match only one shot down.

Bob Hutchesson’s crew played Bill Scott’s side and this time Port MacDonnell had a 31-25 win.

Don McCarthy skipped against Colin Bobridge and his side came home with a 28-23 win to give Port MacDonnell the overall win 79/14 to 69/2.

Division 4 hosted Penola was the only winning rink was that led by Jennie Tilley.

Skips Peter Rutherford and Bryan Feast and their players were not able to get on top of their opponents.
