ALL SMILES: Darren Harding had a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at the Mount Gambier Golf Club recently.

IT was football colours day at the Mount Gambier Golf Club when players in the field wore their favourite team’s colours to celebrate the AFL grand final.

As a result of the grand final in the afternoon only the morning field of 72 played in the shotgun-start stableford competition, where Jason Millhouse scored back-to-back victories and followed up his win recently with 42 points in B Grade.

He also teamed with Nic Clayton to comfortably win the “fun” football competition, when they scored 55 points.

Played in teams of two players, if both had three points each on a hole it registered as a goal, while other scores resulted in a behind, or a wipe by either player was ruled out of bounds.

It was a no-contest with the duo blowing away the rest of the field as they each scored heavily in normal competition, with Millhouse’s 42 points complemented by Clayton’s 37.

Millhouse had 20 on the outward nine, with 22 on the return, helped by a birdie on the par four 12th hole.

As he walked off the course, Millhouse surely said goodbye to his 14 handicap.

Runner-up in B Grade was Damian Smith on 41 with an impressive 22 points on the front nine.

The best score of the day went to North Melbourne fan and famous Glencoe sporting family member Brad Von Duve with 43.

His score topped C Grade and when he made the turn with 19 points he trailed his usual playing partner Jack Jennings by one.

On the walk home, Von Duve had six three-pointers in his 24 points to leave Jennings second in the grade with 40 points, which included a great birdie on the tough 10th par three.

In A Grade, Jeffrey Hodge stole the show with 41 points.

He had a split of 21/20, which was helped by a birdie on the eighth.

He was two shots ahead of Trent Eitzen on 39, who despite having a wipe on the 11th, came home with 20 points thanks to birdies on 16 and 18.

In D Grade Graham Thomas won on a count-back on 38 points from John Ritcher with a better back nine of 21 points.

Others on the winner’s list included Bryce Cutting (40) Peter Waters (39), Leigh McCracken, Mike Rookas (38), Tim Driver, Nic Clayton (37), Graham Greenwood, John Miles, Richard Gosling (36), Garry Boston, Neil McKay, Ron McIntyre, Peter Jones (35), Mick Gill, Adrian Ballintyne and Darren Griffin (34).

Darren Harding took the pro shot on the eighth hole thanks to a hole-in-one, while Clayton took the honours on the 16th.

Birdie balls were won by Hodge, Eitzen, Jennings, Driver and Ballintyne.
