Ferguson right on track at Blue Lake

SOLID ROUND: Mark Ferguson was pleased with his round of golf on Saturday at the Blue Lake Golf Links, with 46 points to claim the honours.

MARK Ferguson celebrated in style on Saturday at the Blue Lake Golf Club, as he carded an impressive round of 46 points to claim the honours.

The current C Grade handicap champion was part of an 82-strong field on a good spring day for golf.

Ferguson set up his win on the front nine, as the 34-handicapper parred two holes, along with four bogeys to record 24 points and win the overall best score of the day by a massive seven shots.

In A Grade it was Bill Burley who swept aside his poor form of late for a one-shot victory with a score of 39 points, which included a round of three birdies and 10 pars.

He narrowly defeated long-hitting Marc Dalton, who was only one shot back in second place on 38.

He also managed three birdies for his round on on the third, 11th and 15th holes, but a double bogey six on the par 4 18th proved costly as he beat Trevor McLean for the minor prize.

McLean carded a score of 38 points as well and he too recorded three birdies – all on the front nine on the first, third and ninth holes.

A double on the par 4 seventh and a wipeout on the par 4 eighth proved costly, but splits of 19/19 allowed him to finish in third place.

Colin Stratford took out B Grade with a round of 39 points, also on a count-back.

He had to be content with his grade win, which was some consolation to his recent defeat to Ferguson in the handicap championships.

It was his back nine which enabled him to secure the victory as he collected three pars and scored 21 points to edge out promising new member Jamal Jakubenko who also recorded 39 points with splits of 18 and 21, including a birdie on the par 4 11th hole.

David Goldspring rounded out the placings with 37 points.

In C Grade it was beloved Saint Kilda supporter Tony Morandin standing tall as the early morning regular who collected the chocolates with a round of 39 points, with a highlight his birdie three on the par 4 ninth hole.

He edged out valuable course volunteer Bruce Tichbon, who also returned to the clubhouse with a score of 39, which included splits of 20/19.

Rounding out the placings was new member David Gould, two shots back on 37.

Ball run down winners were Kevin Howell 37, David Whitehead 37, Ros McMahon 37, Peter Mickelsen 36, Ross Bond 36, John Robertson 36, Alan Larkin 36, James Eastick 36, Jim Ferrazola 36 and Keith Ransom 36.

Pro shot winners were Brain Dunn on the fifth hole and Alan Larkin on the 16th.

Nearest the pin in A Grade went to Neal Doody.

WOMEN’S GOLF

IN the women’s division Lyn Annand recorded a win with an impressive round of 38 points, which included a score of 21 on the front nine to set up a four-shot victory from Viv Wilson.

Wilson was steady all day to record an impressive 35 points.

TUESDAY COMPETITION

DUE to the greens being cored and sanded, a nine-hole competition took place last Tuesday and 26 players still took their place in the field.

It was early morning regular Jim Ferrazola who posted the winning score of 19 points in a three-way count-back from Kym Vaughan and John Kamp.
