Last chance to poll votes for season awards

BACK FOR MORE: Mid South East Netball Association 2017 A Grade best and fairest winner Laura Schultz has been at her best again this season and as a result the Mount Burr player will be expected to poll well again at the presentations held on August 26.

MID South East Netball Association will crown its finest athletes at its senior and junior presentation night at the Millicent Civic and Arts Centre on August 26.

This weekend will close the door on the minor round games of 2018, which sees the business end of the season kick off next week.

It is difficult to pick a winner of the prestigious A Grade best and fairest award, as an abundance of players have had stellar seasons on court.

Kalangadoo is again the front-runner of the competition in 2018 and as a result, several of its players will poll well in the end tally.

Melissa Russell and Abbey Duncan have been arguably the best goalie combination in the association this season.

Their accuracy and movement in the circle is a key to the Magpies’ success and the duo will certainly poll their fair share.

Jayde Peacock is another Kalangadoo netballer who is in her best form.

Peacock polls well every season and with just one loss to the Magpies’ name, any of these top players could take out the prestigious best and fairest accolade.

However, Hatherleigh was the side to serve Kalangadoo its first loss in years and there are plenty of netballers capable of polling well in the Eagles’ A Grade side.

Keston Green is in top form this season and is expected to feature high in the votes, while Maddie Redman had a great Country Championships in Adelaide and that has reflected in her season at the defensive end for Hatherleigh.

Glencoe goalies Ebony McDiarmid and Chantelle Cocks are another solid combination.

Both have been stand outs for the Murphies this season.

Sarah Edwards also returned to Glencoe after a year at North Gambier and she has been an asset to the team.

Kate Varcoe and Jami Walker have led from the front for Tantanoola all season and are another two netballers to stand up this season.

However, votes could be evenly spread throughout these top four sides – due to several players doing their bit on court – which could see the silverware handed to a player in a lower-ranked team.

Ebony Clark brought her stellar Country Championship form back to Mount Burr and has dominated the season in the goal circle.

Both Clark and 2017 best and fairest winner Laura Schultz will be expected to feature high on the final standings.

Kongorong’s success throughout this season has been a team effort, but Brittany McEvoy, Jessie Little or Roxy Gibson may gain some votes.

Port MacDonnell’s Megan Hein, Robe’s Georgia Hunter and Kim Ross, along with Nangwarry’s Malinda Markiewicz are all quality players in the association.

However, their sides have failed to win many matches throughout 2018 and as a result they will struggle to poll towards the top of the list.

The Mid South East Netball Association Under 21 award will also be hotly contested.

Several players in the A Grade ranks are eligible for the prestigious award.

Hatherleigh’s Lara MacGregor and Maddie Pulmer have had solid season, while Kalangadoo’s Jasmine Croser could also be in contention.

Emma Gould and Olivia Fuller are two young guns from Tantanoola, while Glencoe’s Edwards would also be a favourite to win.

There are numerous players from other clubs, but with their teams failing to win the bulk of their games they will struggle to poll high in the votes.

The 17 and Under competition has been close, which could result in a tough battle for the best and fairest.

Players to watch are MacGregor (Hatherleigh), Gould (Tantanoola), Sophie Wallis (Mount Burr), Halle Carter (Robe) and Chelsea Croser (Kalangadoo).
