Consecutive cups for South East golfers

BACK-TO-BACK TITLES: Sam MacLeod, Ben Thiel, Tilly Miels, Mitchell Hanford and Parker Smith were part of the South East side which claimed the Brett Ogle Cup for the second year running at Port Augusta Golf Club last week.

SOUTH East juniors claimed back-to-back Division 1 titles when it took out the Brett Ogle Cup for the second year running at Port Augusta Golf Club last week.

The cup is an annual teams match-play event, rotated through the right country golf districts.

Seven districts took part in this year’s event, with South East winning the Division 1 trophy and Mid North winning Division 2.

Both sides went through their respective competitions undefeated.

On day one, a total of 40 players competed in the district qualifying event with good scoring across the field.

Best female score of the day was Northern District’s Shakira-ann Kuys who fired an 81 off the stick, while best male score went to Yorke Peninsula’s Liam Zeller with a gross 76.

South East district set the pace as top qualifier, while Southern, Northern and Eyre rounded out Division 1.

Division 2 included teams from Mid North, Murraylands, Yorke Peninsula and a combined districts team.

Solid golf was played on day two, with South East defeating Northern 4-1 and Southern defeating Eyre 3-2 in Division 1.

In Division 2, Mid North defeated Yorke Peninsula 4-1 and Combined Districts were too strong for Murraylands to win 3.5-1.5.

On day three in Division 1, South East claimed its second win to defeat Southern 3-2, while Eyre defeated Northern 4-1.

In Division 2, Mid North won over Murraylands 4-1 and while Yorke Peninsula halved with the Combined Districts team.

Overall, South East was too strong in Division 1 and Mid North in Division 2 claiming the trophies.

Special mentions to Cameron Bickley (day one) and Jayden Zeller (day two) who both had a hole in one on the par three, third hole.

“All players participated very well in excellent conditions and showed great sportsmanship,” Golf SA development coach Allan Telford said.

“Port Augusta hosted the event fantastically well and put on fabulous three days for all players and their families.”

Division 1 ladder: South East 3 wins; Southern 2, Eyre 1, Northern 0.

Division 2 ladder: Mid North 3 wins; Combined Districts 1.5; Murraylands 1; Yorke Peninsula 0.5.

Individual games won

Division 1: South East 12 games; Southern 10; Northern 6; Eyre 2.

Division 2: Mid North 11.5; Combined Districts 7.5; Murraylands 6.5; Yorke Peninsula 4.5.

Best gross score: Liam Zeller (Yorke Peninsula) 76.

Best nett: Bradley Munns (Northern) 65; Zac Jarrett (Yorke Peninsula) 65.

Nett scores – ball run down winners: Billy Martin (Southern) 66; Sam Beason (Mid-North) 67; Mitch Kingston (Murraylands) 70; Sam MacLeod (South East 70).

Girls nett scores: Armarni Marsters (Murraylands) 72; Charlotte Tassell (Mid North) 76.
