Williams shines on damp course

Golf club and ball. Preparing to shot

BLUE Lake Golf Club competitors took part in the June monthly medal last Saturday and had to contend with early showers.

That did not stop one of the region’s best golfers in Anthony Williams posting a superb round of one under par 69, with the one-handicapper recording an overall nett score of 68 to claim the monthly medal honours.

His round consisted of an inward nine of one under par 34 as he collected eight pars, plus a birdie on the eighth hole.

He began the back nine in style with birdies on the 10th and 12th holes to take him to three under par to eye off the course record.

But bogeys on the par three, 16th and par five, 17th hindered his thoughts of setting a new mark.

In A Grade it was Michael Dedonatis who enjoyed his return to golf and has always showed a liking to the course at its full length.

His 39 off the stick on the opening nine set up his win, which could of been more impressive if it was not for a bogey, double bogey finish.

However, his score of 81-11-70 nett was good enough to give him a win from big-hitting Marc Dalton, who went out in a one over par 36, but bogies on the 10th, 11th and 12th proved costly as he finished one shot back on 74-3-71.

Rounding out the placings was Tigers Hockey Club stalwart Greg Cooper one shot back with a round of 86-14-72 nett.

Alan Gale set up a win in B Grade with five pars for his round and nine’s of 45 and 43 were enough to give him a fine round of 88-19-69 nett for an impressive four-shot win from the assistant handicapper David Johnson who claimed second place on a count-back as he carded a score of 93-21-72 nett.

Rob Lindner rounded out the placings with a score of 92-20-72 nett.

It was Tony Morandin who once again stood tall in C Grade as the early morning starter claimed yet another win.

His 46 on the back nine included back-to-back pars which were pivotal in his victory, as he carded a round of 96-26-70 nett.

He was followed closely by up-and-coming junior Callum Harvey, who continues to impress and no doubt his birdie on the par four, 15th was a highlight of his round to help him return with a score of 95-24-71.

A further shot back was Steve J. Dwyer, who also birdied the par four, 15th on his way to a round of 99-27-72 nett.

Ball run down winners were David Whitehead 72, Kevin Mansell, John Kamp 73, Neal Doody, Colin Stratford, Trevor Little, Richard Dean 74, Stephen Harvey, Richard Evans 75 and Jamal Jakubenko 76 nett c/b.

Pro shot winners were Col Ferguson on the fifth hole and Colin Stratford on 16th, with the pair collecting four balls each.

Nearest the pins went to A Grade’s Michael Dedonatis and B Grade’s Ben Wilson.

Long drives went to A Grade’s Todd Williams, B Grade’s Ben Wilson and C Grade’s Kevin Mansell.

The novelty event for the least putts went to David Whitehead with 27 strokes of the flat stick.

In the women’s division it was Dianne Perryman who recorded a comfortable win with a fine round of 95-21-74 nett.

The highlight of her round was her birdie two on the 147 metre par three, 14th, which saw her card an excellent 45 on the back nine.

Finishing in second place was Josie Ashby, who recorded two pars on her front nine, but had to be content with a round of 98-22-76 nett to finish two shots back from the winner.

Winner of the long drive was Annette Ford and the least putts went to overall winner Dianne Perryman.

The hole-in-one jackpot is $1000.

Tuesday competition

FORMER South Gambier cricketing great Colin Ferguson continued his good form of late and none better than last Tuesday as he complied a winning score of 40 points.

That included an impressive five birdies for his round on holes five, six, eight, 17 and 18 to shoot and even par round of 70 and easily account for left hander Simon Perryman, who set up his round of 37 points with 22 on the front nine.

Ian Bown rounded out the placings after an impressive 21 on the front nine, but could only muster 15 on the back side for a total of 36 points.
