Netball: Eagles hold second on Mid South East ladder

GOOD FINISH: Mount Burr’s Ebony Clark takes aim during the Mozzies’ clash with Hatherleigh in Round 7 of Mid South East netball at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval on Saturday.

Hatherleigh 66 d Mount Burr 51

HATHERLEIGH hold second position on the Mid South East netball ladder with a 15-goal victory over a charging Mount Burr outfit.

The Eagles started the game with intense defensive pressure, which caused turnovers that were capitalised on through goal attack Keston Green.

While Hatherleigh had more of the ball, the Mozzies were able to keep in the game through accurate shooting from Ebony Clark.

The Eagles held a slim five-goal lead at the first break.

Hatherleigh made changes with Jess Bowman taking the goal keeper bib, which freed up Maddie Redman to move out to goal defence.

Again the quarter started off evenly as both sides defensive pressure started to come into the game.

The Eagles’ changes in defence had an impact on the game with Redman putting pressure on Mount Burr’s goalies, which resulted in a number of timely interceptions.

By half time Hatherleigh had extended its lead to eight.

The Eagles’ Maddie Pulmer came off and Helen Hamilton went into goal shooter, which allowed Lara McGregor to fill the wing defence position.

Green continued to dominate in the circle and connected well with Kelsey Wight who was having an impact on the attacking wing.

Hatherleigh was again lifted with great defensive pressure all over the court, which created turnovers that Green would convert into goals.

Mount Burr’s Laura Schultz and the Eagles’ Sarah Faulkner were playing a strong game against each other and providing drive for their respective teams.

Towards the end of the quarter Green came off with blood and Pulmer went on at goal attack and continue to score well for her team.

Green returned to the court for the last quarter at goal shooter, while Pulmer stayed at goal attack.

Mount Burr started the final term strong and increased its defensive pressure, which resulted in the Eagles out-scoring the Mozzies by just one goal.

Despite the impressive fourth quarter, Mount Burr was still down by the final whistle and Hatherleigh took the premiership points.

Tantanoola 63 d Port MacDonnell 45

DESPITE remaining in the contest early, Port MacDonnell was unable to match Tantanoola in Round 7 of Mid South East netball.

Both sides fought hard for possession early in the contest, but it was the Tigers who created the turnover.

Jami Walker and Emma Gould were working well in Tantanoola’s goal circle, but Darcie Kuhl and Brooke Hawkins were doing their best to curb their influence.

Down the other end, goalies Cody Manning and Megan Hein moved the ball well to their feeders and utilised every possession.

However, Tantanoola took a five-goal lead heading into the first break.

Kate Varcoe and Libby Howe-Morgan fought hard in the centre, but it was Varcoe who came out on top.

She was able to force turnovers, which allowed the Tigers’ goalies to convert.

Kate Bromley, Olivia Fuller and Simone Little were putting a halt to the Demons’ smooth transition into attack.

However, when the ball did make it into the goal circle, Hein made the most of the opportunity.

She was able to net 10-from-11 for the quarter to minimise the damage.

Both sides made changes entering the third quarter, Howe-Morgan moved to wing defence, which opened up centre for Jess Trench.

The Tigers injected Vic Lucas into the contest and wing defence, while Little took the goal keeper bib.

Tantanoola came out firing and Port MacDonnell could not keep up with its ball speed.

Precise feeding from Casey Walker also added to the dominant quarter by the Tigers, which saw them up by 20 come the final break.

Despite the large deficit, Port MacDonnell did not give up.

Its defensive pressure lifted all over the court in the final stanza, which made slowed down Tantanoola.

Trench caused a number of turnovers, but it was the Tigers who finished strong and took the points.

Glencoe 88 d Nangwarry 50

GLENCOE managed a convincing victory over Nangwarry in a high-scoring affair on Saturday.

From the opening whistle both teams started the game strong.

The Murphies’ goal attack Chantelle Cocks attacked the ball and finished with confidence, while at the other end the Saints’ goal attack Malinda Markiewicz was equally as impressive.

It was a rather even quarter, but the Murphies were able to hold a slim five-goal lead at the break.

The second term saw Glencoe start strong through intense defensive pressure from wing defence Jordy Jones and goal defence Sarah Edwards.

Cocks and Ebony McDiarmid were able to capitalise on the turnovers and the Murphies converted on 22 occasions in the quarter.

Cassie Dinnison worked tirelessly at centre for Nangwarry and was matched up well against Jenna Paproth.

However, the strong quarter from the Murphies saw them go into the long break with a 17-goal lead.

Glencoe’s confidence continued to grow in the third quarter when Paproth moved to wing attack and Alyce Finnis into centre.

Nangwarry shuffled many of its players also, moving Dinnison to team up with Markeiwicz in the attacking circle.

But the defensive duo of Sarah Edwards and Caitlin Liebich worked hard to create turnovers.

The last quarter saw a total of 35 goals shot with just three misses in total, by both sides.

The accuracy of the goalies was a highlight of the game.

Tahlia Wilson was moved to goal shooter in the last quarter for Nangwarry and did not miss her scoring opportunities, but it was to no avail as Glencoe run out easy victors.

Kongorong 58 d Robe 41

KONGORONG kept its finals hopes alive with a 17-goal win over Robe on the weekend.

The Hawks put together a strong four quarters and left little in the tank.

Robe knew it was always going to be a tough task, but would be happy with its level of competitiveness.

The Roosters have had little success so far this season, winning just one game for the year.

In the end, Kongorong’s quick transition into attack and intense defensive pressure was too much for Robe.

Emma Rathjen and Kaylah Earl were best for Kongorong, while Lucy Perkins and Georgia Hunter stood out for the Roosters.
