Basketball: Pioneers release star recruit

STAR IMPORT OUT: Mount Gambier Pioneers’ star import Majok Deng has been released from his playing contract after sustaining an ankle injury early in the season and with plans to head to the USA for the NBL camps in July.

THE Mount Gambier Pioneers have recently announced they have released one of their star recruits for 2018.

Majok Deng has been on the sidelines with a severe ankle injury since his second week with the club, missing the last five games.

With a return still a couple of weeks away and Deng receiving substantial interest from NBA teams for trial opportunities, all parties have agreed it is best for him to focus on preparing for these camps which start early June.

“I know that Majok is bitterly disappointed at not being able to join his team mates on court over recent weeks,” Pioneers coach Richard Hill said.

“He has been great support to them from the bench, whilst clearly frustrated at not being able to help on court.”

Deng has spent the last couple of weeks back in Adelaide having treatment with the 36ers physiotherapists and medical staff with a view to getting back on court as soon as possible.

The extent of his injury, together with the timelines around an extended trip to the US make this decision the only practical option available.

“I was looking forward to having Majok work with us in our title defence,” Hill said.

“I believe he would have been a real difference maker for us.”

Deng will spend the next few weeks getting into peak condition with a view to impressing NBA scouts at camps in June with and eye on the NBA Summer League in July.

The Pioneers have been working hard to supplement their depleted roster with an announcement imminent within in a few days.
