KALANGADOO put up a solid fight in the Mid South East Netball Association A Grade competition over the weekend against Glencoe.

Goals were steady between the two teams in the first quarter before things quickly took a turn as one team powered on ahead.

Kalangadoo 75 d Glencoe 38

While the end result was less than ideal, the Murphies would be pleased with their solid start.

They were able to go goal-for-goal with the reigning premiers for majority of the opening quarter.

However, the Magpies were able to take a solid grip on the game late in the term to hold a seven-goal lead at the first break.

Glencoe held its ground in the second quarter, which saw Laura Edwards come on at wing defence in attempt to curb the influence of Shauni Cunningham as her patience and precise feeding was making it difficult for the defenders to intercept.

The Murphies’ Ebony McDiarmid was influential in the circle and the game become a great contest with both sides applying effective defensive pressure.

But it was again Kalanagdoo who outscored its opponent before the half time break.

The Magpies hit their straps in the third quarter, with their defensive pressure from Jasmine Croser, Georgia Duncan and Chloe Pratt a focal point.

The trio’s interceptions were then capitalised on through Abbey Duncan and Melissa Russell and Kalangadoo shot 22 goals to hold a 53-27 lead at the final break.

Glencoe made changes within their defensive circle.

However, little could stop Kalangadoo’s polished team and in the end the Magpies claimed a comfortable victory.

Croser and Cunningham were awarded best for Kalangadoo, while the Murphies Jordy Jones and McDiarmid were stand outs.

Tantanoola 55 d Robe 27

TANTANOOLA easily accounted for Robe in Round 6 of Mid South East netball on Saturday.

The Tigers dug their claws into the contest early and capitalised on the undermanned Roosters’ errors through the mid court.

Kate Varcoe was working hard in defence, which put the pressure on Robe’s attack.

She paired well with Victoria Lucas and the duo was able to create a number of turnovers early in the game.

Emma Gould was converting well for Tantanoola and as a result the Tigers held a 12-goal lead at the first break.

Robe was without regular mid court players Georgia Hunter and Kim Ross on the weekend and their absence was proving difficult to fill.

The Roosters swapped up their team at the break, with Lucy Perkins stepping into centre and Keryn Moore making the move to wing defence.

The changes swung to momentum and Kimberley Austin and Laura Hawkins took various intercepts for Robe and the Roosters not only kept up with Tantanoola, but beat it by one goal.

At half time, Robe made another change with Halle Carter resting and Ash Hunt moving to goal attack.

Camille Tucker was brought on to wing attack, while the Tigers remained the same.

Gould continued to shoot with accuracy despite pressure from the Roosters’ Austin and Tantanoola’s mid court – in particular Lucas at wing defence – was causing havoc for Robe.

The Tigers were well on their way to victory and in the last quarter took advantage of Robe’s errors to win by a comfortable 28 goals.

Best players for Tantanoola went to Kate Bromley and Lucas, while the Roosters’ stand outs were Austin and Hawkins.

Mount Burr 64 d Port MacDonnell 39

IT was a disappointing day out for the undermanned Port MacDonnell side, which barley challenged Mount Burr.

Despite a strong start, which saw the Demons score the opening few goals, Port MacDonnell struggled to keep up with the strength and pace of the Mozzies.

Cody Manning took the goal shooter position and complemented Megan Hein well, despite the strength of Mount Burr’s defenders Ann Guyett and Sophie Wallis.

However, the quick movement of the Mozzies’ centre Laura Shultz opened up endless opportunities for Hayley Agnew and Ebony Clark who shot with accuracy to finish the quarter six goals ahead.

Port MacDonnell made a change, seeing Brooke Hawkins move from goal keeper to goal defence.

Hawkins did well to limit Agnew’s influence on the game, keeping her to just six goals.

However, Clark was able to compensate strongly, scoring 11 for the quarter.

Jess Trench moved into centre and directed the Port MacDonnell attack line well to assist Hein and Manning.

Both sides stepped up in the third term, but the Demons struggled to limit Mount Burr’s scoring.

The trend continued into the final quarter as Clark continued to present well in the circle, 12 of the Mozzies’ 16 goals.

Port MacDonnell’s fitness was a set back throughout the final quarter and the attack line became stagnant, making some unforced errors and allowing Mount Burr’s strong defence to capitalise.

In the end the Mozzies took the win by 25 goals.

Mount Burr’s Agnew and Guyett were recognised for their efforts, while best for Port MacDonnell was Manning and Hawkins.

Kongorong 53 d Nangwarry 39

KONGORONG claimed its second victory of the season against the winless Nangwarry outfit on Saturday.

The Saints started well, but the Hawks managed to find their rhythm late in the opening quarter.

Sam Loughhead shot with accuracy and was well-backed by Brittany McEvoy, which saw Kongorong hold a three-goal lead at the first break.

Nangwarry lost its momentum in the second term, which allowed the Hawks to snatch up a number of easy turnovers.

Kongorong’s lead stretched to 12 by the long break and looked strong.

The Saints made changes in attempt to bounce back into the contest.

Cassie Dinnison moved into the mid court, while Tahlia Wilson returned to the goal circle and Demi Pearce took a defensive role.

Nangwarry came out firing and applied defensive pressure all over court to get within seven goals of the Hawks.

However, Kongorong soon settled in the final quarter, while the Saints struggled to deal with the pressure and make the most of their turnovers.

In the end, it was the Hawks who came out on top.

Loughhead and McEvoy were best for Kongorong, while Malinda Markiewicz and Carly Ploenges were solid for Nangwarry.
