Fast finishes: Cyclists pack plenty of pace

ALL SMILES: Angus Maddern prior to claiming the Victorian 100km Championship at Casterton recently.

THE Wal Smith weekend of cycling was met with clear and sunny conditions which ensured a large numbers of cyclists and fast finishing times, over the two days of competitive, handicapped racing at Casterton.

Race organisers were pleased with the results and the popularity this historical event has held for many years.

A major highlight for the Mount Gambier Cycling Club was Angus Maddern’s 100km Victorian Championship.

Meanwhile, in the junior races club rider Jack Opperman challenged the front groups with the fastest time in the Kelpie Classic Junior Race.

The club thanks the committee of the Wal Smith Cycling Foundation and their work in staging a unique country carnival.

Club member Doug Issell was a big contributor to the successful event this year.
