Spouses dominate outdoor round

DYNAMIC DUO: Helen and Peter Austin were the leading archers in the recent WA 60/900 outdoor round for the Blue Lake Archery Club, with Helen winning the day while husband Peter finished runner-up.

THE Blue Lake Archers have hit the weather jackpot for their outdoor events over the past two weeks.

With such good conditions the natural choice was to choose the longest range event from those scheduled for the day.

On the first weekend the WA 60/900 round starting at 60 metres was chosen ahead of the other choices of a 50-metre Melbourne or a 40-metre Samford round.

At the shooting line five archers presented themselves to compete.

Husband and wife Peter and Helen Austin were a formidable team, with the pair dominating the day.

Between them they scored nine of the 11 all-gold ends noted on the score sheets, while Paul Freeman chalked up the remain two.

Gary Jacques vied for the lead, but could not outpace the Austin’s.

At the conclusion of the day Peter Austin had claimed the bragging rights for the highest off-the-bow score, but it was wife Helen Austin who went on to claim the day’s honours on adjusted scores,

leading her husband by 10 points after the handicaps were applied.

The Perth 90-arrow round starts at 70 metres and was once the round of choice for of the club, but had become almost forgotten, last appearing on the scoresheets in 2015.

However, this round was a perfect fit for Sunday’s conditions, with the three distances of 70, 60 and 50 metres testing the skills of the five archers in the light winds.

Ben Kilsby was in scintillating form, setting a new personal best for the round.

Phil Tremelling also amassed a credible score with his recurve bow and was looking the likely challenger to Kilsby for the win.

The final adjusted tally for the day showed Tremelling had done just enough to cut Kilsby off at the pass, with the adjusted scoring putting Tremelling four points in front.
