A MOUNT Gambier based driver will show off his skills tonight in his first ever visit to Hobart Speedway.

Mark Jennings is gearing up to contest his maiden Tasmanian Street Stocks Title after receiving an opportunity from Devonport-based racer John Sylvester to pilot his car.

With Sylvester first being introduced to Jennings over the phone a couple of years ago after the latter assisted with the wiring of his Shane Wilson-built engine, he recently decided to extend an invitation to the Mount Gambier-based driver to travel to Hobart and contest the rescheduled Tasmanian Title, which Sylvester is not able to attend, due to work commitments.

Having previously only made the trek over to Tasmania to contest 1992 National Street Stocks Title at Latrobe Speedway, Jennings was more than pleased to accept Sylvester’s invitation to drive his BA Ford Falcon and is hoping to pick up where Sylvester left off, with the 28-year-old racer collecting some strong heat-race performances during the initial running of the event before it was postponed due to rain.

Coming off the back of a recent run of solid results, including a win in the Paige McCarthy Memorial at Mildura’s Timmis Speedway and a second place in the King of the Mountain event at Ballarat’s Redline Raceway, Jennings certainly will not just be making up the numbers when he takes to the Hobart Speedway track.

“I have to say a big thank you to John (Sylvester) for giving me the opportunity to travel to Tasmania and pilot his car,” Jennings said.

“John’s car and engine package is fairly like mine, so I’m hoping that will give us a bit of a head start when it comes to learning the track.

“The plan is try and qualify well for the feature race and then hopefully reward John and his family with a podium result.”
