Basketball: Summer season champions decided

A RESERVE PREMIERS: Panthers’ Tyler Ambrose-Pearce (back left), Kurt Rodis, Riley Thomson, Dylan Andrae, Lawrence Bradley-Brown (front left) and Scott Brooksby claimed a convincing win in the men’s A Reserve grand final.

THE summer basketball season finished on a high once again, as the Mount Gambier and District Basketball League grand finals were played across all grades recently.

All teams battled it out on the court with players showcasing their talent and competitive streak.

Men’s A Reserve

Panthers 63 d Roos 36

PANTHERS were comfortable winners of the Men’s A Reserve grand final, claiming a 27-point win over the Roos.

Kurt Rodis dominated the first quarter, scoring 21 points to give Panthers a strong grip on the match.

He finished the game with a total of 35 points, while the consistent Riley Thomson had 13.

Mark Bachmann led the scoring for the Roos with 11 points to his name.

At the end of the match Rodis was named as most valuable player for the grand final on the back of this match-winning performance.

Meanwhile, the voting for the most valuable player of the season was extremely close.

Panthers’ playing coach Lawrence Bradley-Brown won the award with 23 votes, just one vote in front of Roos’ Brendon Bachmann on 22.

Women’s A Reserve

Cougars White 38 d Cougars Maroon 27

THE A Reserve Women’s grand final was played between the two Cougars teams, reflecting the overall strength of the club.

In the end it was Cougars White who, after a close contest early in the game, managed to draw away in the final quarter to record an 11-point win.

Ebony McDiarmid led the charge for the White team, supported by Felicity Clayton, while State Under 18 player Keryl Ousey worked hard for the Maroon side.

McDiarmid was named most valuable player for the final, while the most valuable player for the season went to Ousey, who scored 27 votes.

Runner-up was Roos’ Ellen Brown with 18.

B GRADE GOLD: The South Eastern Ravens’ team of Leigh Dougherty (back left), Matthew Ray, John Stafford, Nick Bignall, Brett Hill, Josh Nobes, Scott Montgomery (front left) and Ben Marcus finished the summer season with the B Grade Gold Division premiership victory.

Men’s B Grade Gold

South Eastern Ravens 47 d Clean Skins 24

IN the men’s B Grade Gold Division, the premiership went to the South Eastern Ravens, as they claimed a solid win over the Clean Skins in the decider.

The Ravens’ Matt Ray scored a game-high 13 points, which saw him awarded the title of most valuable player for the final.

Brett O’Neil led the scoring for Clean Skins with a total of eight points.

Despite the loss, O’Neil was still able to take home the most valuable player for the season trophy.

He polled 20 votes ahead of SE Ravens’ Josh Nobes on 14.

B GRADE BLUE: Couldabeenz’ Scott Flett, Sam Whelan, Simon Brook, Mark Vinko, Jamie Yates and Ciaran Buckley secured a narrow win in the B Grade Blue Division grand final to take out the 2017-18 summer season title.

Men’s B Grade Blue

Couldabeenz 34 d Wreckers 32

THE closest contest on grand final night came from the men’s B Grade Blue Division clash, which saw Couldabeenz hang on to defeat Wreckers by a narrow two points.

Scott Flett top scored for the premiers with 11 points, while Michael Stephens recorded a game-high of 15 for Wreckers.

Couldabeenz’ Simon Brook was named the MVP for the final, while Flett topped off a good night with a convincing win for the most valuable player of the season award.

He scored 25 votes to top Tigers’ runner-up Daniel Collins with 16.

WOMEN’S SOCIAL: Roos’ women’s social team of coach Nick Stevens (back left), Kristyn Holmes, Emma Holmes, Abby Whitehead, Brooke Holmes, Brianna Scheer (front left), Jordanna Jones and Hannah Allwright took home the 2017-18 premiership.

Women’s Social

Roos 24 d Kerbies 17

ROOS’ Social Women’s team finished its steady progress over the season with a grand final win over Kerbies.

Claiming the title by seven points, Abby Whitehead was solid at the hoop for Roos scoring 10, while Tamara Ferguson and Georgia McInerney finished off for Kerbies.

Roos’ Jordana Jones was awarded the MVP for the grand final, while the season’s award went the way of Bullettes’ Toni Sims, who polled 15 votes.

Runner-up Kerbies’ Ferguson with 12 votes.
