South Gambier 1.6 (12) d East Gambier 1.1 (7)

THE Limestone Coast Women’s Football League consolation final saw East Gambier go up against South Gambier on Sunday, with the latter claiming a five-point victory to finish in third place for the season.

An inaccurate game saw the Demons with six minors, equating to half their total score.

However, with the conditions as they were, the 2017 premiers would have been happy with this result in the end, as the wind and rain affected all aspects of their game.

The Bulldogs hit hard in the opening term to score a major and a minor, while holding the Demons scoreless for a seven-point lead.

However, this was the only impact East would have on the scoreboard, as it was unable to convert in the remaining three quarters.

Three minor scores in the second term were followed by a scoreless quarter for South, leaving the Bulldogs in front going into the final leg.

Mustering all they had left, the Demons were able to find their form and converted a goal and three points in the fourth term, with young-gun Claudia Edmonds finding the big sticks.

This, along with her efforts around the ground saw Edmonds named as South’s best player for the match, while the consistent Kendell Saffin came in at second.

They were joined by Imogen Walker, Zoe Duncan, Kaylene Nuske, Riley Buckingham and Sarah Milne as the Demons’ best.

On the other side of the field, Tyne Bosko was best-on-ground for the Bulldogs, while Sara Smith bagged their only goal.

Sharna McKinnon, Amy Whitehouse and Cindy Gollan were also in fine form, while consistent performers Bo Creek and Nic Collins rounded out the best players for East.

Glencoe 3.1 (19) d Kalangadoo 2.5 (17)

THE closest final match-up saw the Glencoe All Stars and Kalangadoo take to McLaughlin Park for the second clash of Sunday’s Limestone Coast women’s football finals.

With little between the two teams, it was the All Stars who prevailed by a narrow two points, hence holding onto fifth place on the ladder.

The first quarter saw Kalangadoo come out firing, scoring a major and four minors to Glencoe’s single goal.

However, this lead was soon turned around, as the Magpies were held scoreless in the second term, while the All Stars converted their second goal for the game.

Going into the long break with a two-point margin, both teams recorded a major and a minor in the third quarter, leaving the score at 19-17 in Glencoe’s favour.

And this was how the scores sat at the conclusion of the match, with neither side able to hit the scoreboard in the final term.

The hard-earned win in difficult conditions saw Glencoe’s Georgia McPeake named as best-on-ground, while Sarah Edwards, Madi Zuijdveld, Alicia Frankenburg and Emma Hartung-Gleeson were also among the All Stars’ best.

Simone MacDonald was the leading goal-scorer for the game, bagging two majors for her team, with Claire Nolte scoring a single.

The Magpies were best served by Wanita Robinson, while Abbey Shannon and Sharna Devereuax scored a goal each.

Devereuax was also named as second best for her team and she was joined by Bianca Thorn, Chloe Pratt, Alix Lescure, Kylie Schulz and Chloe Long.

North Gambier 3.2 (20) d West Gambier 0.1 (1)

NORTH Gambier finally tasted victory on Sunday, as it opened the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League finals games with a win over West Gambier on Sunday.

It has been a long time coming for the Tigers, who were yet to record a win since the inception of the women’s league last year.

However, with signs of improvement throughout the 2018 season, including a solid effort against premiers Kybybolite last week, North powered home for a 19-point triumph over the Roos.

Holding West to just one point, the southern Tigers were best represented by Sarah Pilven, who took out the best-on-ground title.

She was accompanied by Ella Firth, Lorelle Walker, Alyssa Thomas, Imogen Phillips and Hannah Taylor on the best players’ list, while Firth, Taylor and Walker scored a goal each.

With the Roos once again restricted to a minor score, Emma Lynch was the best player for the eighth-placed team.

Natasha Seacombe was named as second best, while Brittany Allen, Courtney Tait, Caitlin Morris and Mikaylah Hamson all played their part as well.

With the 2018 season done and dusted, all teams will now look forward to next year, with hopes to raise the bar once again in the women’s competition.
