Tennis premiership decided

PREMIERSHIP GLORY: Bradley Mitchell returns the ball with pace during his narrow singles win over Jordan Tucker, as he helps his team on its way to the 2017-18 Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association A1 premiership.

THE 2017-18 Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season has come to an end with a final tight clash between Glencoe and Reidy Park.

Claiming an eventual three-set win, Glencoe’s side finished its strong year on a high, while the A2 final also saw Glencoe finish on top when it’s Maroon team took to the court against Mount Schank.

In the B1 decider, a single game separated the two teams at the end of the day, as Suttontown Tigers narrowly took home the premiership over Moorak Green.

The last grand final also kept to the trend of this season, with Glencoe defeating Centrals four sets to two in the mixed doubles premiership match.

A1 – Glencoe 10-78 d Reidy Park 7-72

AFTER a solid season which saw the side finish top of the ladder after the minor rounds, Glencoe’s A1 team concluded the final’s series in the same fashion.

Up against second-place finisher Reidy Park in the decider, Glencoe defeated its rival by three sets to claim the premiership.

In the end it all came down to the doubles matches, as the set count was level after the men’s and women’s singles had been completed.

Glencoe was well represented in the men’s games, winning three of the four clashes.

Dylan Childs set an example when he defeated Ky Edwards 6-0 and Bradley Mitchell had a close victory over Jordan Tucker in a tiebreak 7-6.

Jonathon Brohier also secured a win for Glencoe, accounting for Stephen Young 6-4, while Matthew Stark was the only winner for Reidy, defeating David Ferguson 6-2.

The tables were turned in the women’s singles, as Reidy put on a solid display to win three games.

Bailey Young, Brittany McEvoy and Emily Edwards won each of their games, with the closest seeing McEvoy with a 6-4 victory over Ashlea Edwards.

However, the top order singles saw Glencoe’s Sarah Edwards defeat Olivia McEvoy 6-3, which saw both teams on four sets each going into the doubles.

The closest doubles game saw Sarah and Laura Edwards with a tight three-set match against Olivia and Brittany McEvoy, with the Edwards combination coming out on top after a tiebreak in the third set.

With the only doubles victory for Reidy coming from Bailey Young and Sharon Edwards, Glencoe amassed enough sets to emerge the victors, hence taking out the 2017-18 premiership.

A2 – Glencoe Maroon 12-84 d Mount Schank 2-59

A DOMINANT performance from Glencoe Maroon saw it claim a 10-set victory over Mount Schank in Saturday’s A2 grand final.

With the two teams finishing first and second on the ladder respectively, Glencoe proved its strength across all disciplines, while Mount Schank was unable to convert in the many close matches on the day.

Of the total of three 7-6 results, each of them went Glencoe’s way, leaving Mount Schank with little to show for itself in a tight contest.

In the men’s singles, Troy Classohm set a good example in the top-order game, defeating Mount Schank’s Andrew Hughes 6-3.

This was followed by a 7-5 win for Tim Biggins over Will Seidel, while Glencoe’s Will Hann was unable to match Bobby Laabadan, going down 3-6.

In the women’s games, Glencoe won all four encounters, with the closest results seeing Abbie Cocks and Erica Hurley with 7-6 wins over Sophie Boston and Kaitlyn Nisbet respectively.

With Glencoe winning five of the six doubles matches played, Mount Schank had little to offer on the scoreboard at the conclusion of the day as Glencoe claimed another senior premiership for 2017-18.

B1 – Suttontown Tigers 6-59 d Moorak Green 6-58

THE closest match among Saturday’s grand finals was the B1 decider, as Suttontown Tigers secured the premiership by one game when it contested for the title with Moorak Green.

Finishing on six sets apiece, it all came down to the number of games won, with Suttontown finishing on 59 to Moorak’s 58.

The Tigers had little to show in the men’s singles, as Daniel Smith was the only victor for the side.

Christian McCombe had a close match against Moorak’s Trevor Pettingill, but went down 5-7, while Tom Inglis was unable to contest with Chris Tully in the top-order game, going down 2-6.

However, the women levelled the set count and kept the final even, as both Aimee McLaughlin and Molly Lennon won their games for Suttontown against Marilyn Gordon and Kate Facy, 6-3 and 7-5 respectively.

Tarrah Taylor was the only woman from Moorak to taste singles victory, accounting for Casey Sampson 6-3.

This left it at three sets each, while the doubles games saw neither team able to claim the advantage, with both sides once again winning three of their matches.

But with Suttontown having one more game on the board, the nail-biting clash saw the Tigers emerge as the premiers.
