Golf: Attamurra women start new season

CLOSE TUSSLE: Chris Galpin was presented with the Summer Salver at the women’s opening day at the Attamurra golf course after a close win by one stroke.

LAST Wednesday saw the opening of the Attamurra women’s golfing season when 48 players participated in a social four-ball ambrose in warm and still conditions.

Life members Isobel Phillips and Gloria Lennon attended the presentations.

The winners were mother and daughter combination, Bernie and Donna Jennings, Maxine McGregor and Pauline Paterson, who combined well to produce 73 off-the-stick, resulting in a nett score of 58-1/2.

Close behind were runners-up Faye Mainwaring, Jan Shanahan, Julie Scott and Jennette Braun with 74 off-the-stick for a nett 59.

Another mother and daughter combination, Bev and Kerry Pedlar, guest Bel Williamson and Jane Lamont were third with 72 off-the-stick with nett 60-1/8.

Uci Louis, another guest for the day, took home the non-golfers’ prizes when she won the longest drive on the 18th hole and also nearest the pin on the eighth.

For the golfers, Braun was successful with nearest the pin on the eighth hole, resulting in a birdie, while president Di Norman claimed the longest drive on the 18th.

The successful day preceded the upcoming events including the women’s pennants and the club championships qualifying rounds starting in two weeks’ time on March 21.

The Summer Salver was awarded to Chris Galpin after recently scoring the best three of four rounds to determine the winner.

Competition was close, with Galpin winning by one stroke from Kate McCormick.

Next week’s competition will be a stableford round.
